Tacoma Rainiers (24-19) @ Albuquerque Isotopes (14-31)
Sunday, June 27, 2021 @ 5:05 p.m. PT | Isotopes Park - Albuquerque, NM
RHP Vinny Nittoli (1-0, 3.50) @ RHP José Mujica (1-6, 8.03)
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rainiers broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the 6th inning on Saturday, but the Albuquerque Isotopes scored the game's final five runs and ended the game with a walk-off sacrifice fly, defeating Tacoma, 5-4.
Tacoma sent 10 batters to the plate in the go-ahead 6th inning, and the first seven hitters reached via a leadoff single, five walks and an error.
LHP Daniel Zamora and RHP Taylor Guerrieri each pitched two scoreless innings for Tacoma to start the game. Zack Weiss left two runners stranded in the 8th inning but was charged with the loss after surrendering the 9th inning game-winner for Albuquerque.
SMALL BALL SATURDAY: Rainiers hitters tied a season-high eight walks on Saturday, including five in their four-run 6th inning, but did not record an extra-base hit for just the second time this season (May 9 vs. ELP).
Tacoma also did not home run for 9th time this season. Friday and Saturday marked the second time this year that the Rainiers have not homered for two consecutive games.
WE WENT TO JARRED: Top prospect Jarred Kelenic did not register a hit but walked and scored on Saturday. In the first three games at Albuquerque, Kelenic is 6-for-12 with 2 HR, 7 RBI, 6 runs and 4 extra-base hits.
Kelenic has reached base safely in 18 of 21 games with the Rainiers this season and has a .295/.366/.602 slash line entering Sunday's game.
GET YOUR RALEIGH CAPS ON: Catching prospect Cal Raleigh went 1-for-4 with an RBI, run and walk on Saturday. Raleigh has reached base safely in 35 of 37 games this season while collecting a hit in 33 of those contests.
The 24-year-old remains first in the Triple-A West in doubles (20) and XBH (29). Raleigh also remains top-10 in the league in batting average (.342), total bases (98), SLG (.645), OPS (1.041), RBI (34), and hits (52).
RUNS ARE FUN: The Rainiers are the only team in the Triple-A West that has yet to play in a shutout (win or loss) this season. This is the deepest the Rainiers have gotten into a campaign (43 games) without at least one shutout game since 2011, when it did not happen until the 54th game of the year.
EARLY AND OFTEN: Tacoma has had a lead in each of their last 9 games. The Rainiers are 18-4 when leading after 5 innings this season and are 20-2 when leading after 7 innings following Albuquerque's come-from-behind win on Saturday. Conversely, the club is 2-13 when trailing after 5 innings and 1-14 when trailing after 7.
STAYING AFLOAT: The Rainiers enter Saturday at 5 games above .500 on the season. Tacoma has not been 5 games over the .500 mark on June 27 since 2016, and this is just the 3rd time since 2007. The Rainiers start the day 4.0 games out of first place in the West Division behind Reno.
SHARING THE WEALTH: 20 different Tacoma hitters have hit at least 1 home run this season, tied with Reno for most in the league and 4th most in Triple-A.
CONTACT SPORT: Rainiers hitters have struck out 354 times this season, second fewest in affiliated pro baseball (Louisville, 348). In June, Tacoma has struck out 152 times in 20 games, less than any other minor league team.
No Tacoma hitter ranks top-15 in most strikeouts in the Triple-A West. Cal Raleigh's team-low 20 punch outs ranks T-4th in fewest strikeouts among qualified league hitters.
FULL HOUSE: The Rainiers lead all Triple-A clubs with 67 players used through 43 games. The team has used 38 pitchers, including infielder Jantzen Witte, and 30 position players.
DOING DEFENSE RIGHT: Since June 11, the Rainiers have committed 7 errors, tied for fewest in the Triple-A West, and have a .985 fielding percentage, second best in the league behind Oklahoma City (.986). Tacoma's 31 errors rank 3rd best in the league this season behind El Paso (26) and Oklahoma City (30).
