Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- On Friday night, a pair of rookies took center stage for the Wheeling Nailers, as they earned two divisional points against the Reading Royals. Cody Sylvester and Carter Rowney both posted four-point performances, with Sylvester netting a hat trick, while Rowney dished out three assists, leading Wheeling to a 5-1 triumph at WesBanco Arena.

It took the Nailers just 2:25 to get on the scoreboard, as Sylvester began his magical night. Mike Ratchuk spotted his teammate with a pass at the bottom of the right circle, where Sylvester waited out Riley Gill, before roofing a wrist shot into the top-right corner. Midway through the opening stanza, Wheeling upped its advantage. Chaz Johnson blocked a shot at his own blueline, leading a rush in the other direction. Johnson ended up sliding a pass through to Rowney, who banked a shot off of Gill's glove and in for the tally. Reading got one goal back in the latter stages of the period, as Ryan Cruthers redirected Michal Cajkovsky's shot in the slot, making the score 2-1 after one period of play.

7:46 into the second period, the Nailers added an insurance marker. Sylvester raced the puck down the right side of the ice, letting a wrist shot go, which flew into the right side of the cage. 2:33 later, the Kelowna, BC native completed his hat trick, as he finished off a pass from Tom Kuhnhackl, who was one of four Wheeling players (Sylvester 4, Rowney 4, Kuhnhackl 3, Ratchuk 2) with multiple points.

Kuhnhackl completed the scoring for the Nailers at the 4:01 mark of the third period, when he sniped a shot into the top-right corner of the net, as Wheeling secured the 5-1 victory.

Mike Condon returned from the AHL, stopping 27 of 28 shots in the win for the Nailers. Riley Gill was the losing goaltender for Reading, after surrendering four goals on 12 shots. Brandon Anderson made 15 saves on 16 shots in relief for the Royals.

The Nailers will play host to the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night at 7:00.
