SWB Game Notes

June 18, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders lost the lid-lifter of a three-game set to the Gwinnett Braves on Friday night, 7-1. The RailRiders dropped consecutive games for the first time since suffering three straight defeats from June 4-6. The Braves snapped a three-game losing skid.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME?: At PNC Field, the RailRiders have slashed .254/.316/.381/.697 while scoring 3.97 runs/game. On the road, the team has slashed .268/.343/.406/.749 while scoring 4.89 runs/game. The team has played .500 baseball at home (17-17), but leads the IL with 22 road victories. They are on pace to win 45 games away from NEPA. That would tie the franchise record set by Marc Bombard's 2002 Red Barons who won 91 total games with players like Chase Utley, Marlon Byrd, Brett Myers and Joe Roa. The 2015 RailRiders led the IL with 42 road triumphs and won 10 straight road games from May 14-June 6, tying the 2009 team for the most consecutive road wins as the Yankees' Triple-A team. That 2009 squad began the year 10-0 away from NEPA. The Yankees-era record for overall road wins came in 2012 when the IL North champs won 43 "road" games. That team played without a home stadium during PNC Field's reconstruction and posted all of its 84 wins outside of Moosic.

LORD I WAS BORN A GAMELING MAN: Ben Gamel doubled and walked on a 2-for-4 night. A .250 hitter after an 0-for-4 showing versus Louisville on May 24, he has since gone 36-for-92 over his last 22 games, slashing .391/.472/.554/1.026. He has his average up to .307 (7th in IL). Gamel has particularly crushed since his first game played last road trip on June 11, going 18-for-33 with three triples, eight RBIs and seven runs scored over seven games while slashing .545/.595/.788/1.382.

BELIEVE: Nick Swisher walked on a 2-for-4 night. A .234 bat after an 0-for-5 game versus Columbus on June 4, in 10 games since he has gone 15-for-40 with three homers, 10 RBIs, eight walks and six runs scored. In that span, he has slashed .375/.479/.600/1.079, lifting his overall average by nearly 30 points in less than two weeks to .263, the best it has been since he ended play on May 9 at .271.

J.D.: Jonathan Diaz got aboard twice as the nine-hole hitter, going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. Over his last 10 games played starting on June 7, he has walked 10 times while going 9-for-33 for an impressive .467 OBP. No IL player has more walks over that span.

BULLISH 'PEN: Mark Montgomery and Tyler Webb each stranded two inherited runners. The relief corps. has allowed just 17 of its 78 (21.8%) hand-me-down men to cross on the year. Montgomery fired 1.1 perfect innings. In 10 Triple-A games this season, he has allowed just nine hits in 14 IP (.188 BAA) and owns 17K (10.93/9IP) against just 4BB (4.3:1 K:BB ratio). Webb, who worked his first true relief outing since May 24, has only seen two of his eight inherited men on the season come across. His prior outing technically came in relief at Columbus, but after the rehabbing Chasen Shreve tossed the first. Shreve worked out of the bullpen last night in his second SWB rehab appearance and struck out three in a dominant, perfect seventh on 13 pitches (nine strikes).

OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders have worked five or more walks in six straight games...SWB went 0-for-9 with men in scoring position and stranded 10 men on base...SWB batters No. 3-6 in the order went a combined 0-for-15 with one walk and eight strikeouts...The RailRiders used five pitchers in a game for the first time all season...Eight of Gwinnett's nine hitters posted a hit...The exception, nine-hole man Matt Lipka, went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts...Gwinnett's Emilio Bonifacio swiped his IL-best 23rd base...Only one man has more steals in Triple-A: the PCL's Arismendy Alcantara owns 26 between his time with Iowa and Nashville...The paid attendance of 8,130 made for SWB's sixth fixed-seat sellout (7,115)...After last night's game took 3:07, the RailRiders have played three-plus-hour games in four of their last five and six of their last eight...The RailRiders haven't won a home series since sweeping Indianapolis over three games from May 13-15...They must win today to avoid a series defeat...The squad has lost eight of its last 12 home games since giving the Indians a broom cleaning.
