Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Columbus Clippers, 4-3, at NBT Bank Stadium on Saturday night. Jason Martinson went 2 for 5 with a two-run double in the loss.
Columbus (37-32) opened the scoring in the top of the fifth inning off Syracuse starter Austin Voth. Adam Moore led off with a single into center field. Ronny Rodriguez followed with a bunt, forcing Moore out at second base, while Rodriguez reached at first. After a fly out from Michael Choice, Joey Butler hit a line-drive double to left field to score Rodriguez. The ensuing batter, Colin Cowgill, walked to put runners on first and second. Erik Gonzalez then doubled to right field, plating both Butler and Cowgill. Yandy Diaz wrapped up the scoring with the third double of the inning, scoring Gonzalez, giving the Clippers a 4-0 advantage.
Voth only allowed one baserunner outside of the fifth inning, finishing his night after seven innings, allowing four runs on four hits, while striking out five.
Syracuse (30-36) got on the board for the first time in the bottom of the sixth off Columbus starter Adam Plutko. Brian Goodwin led off with a base-hit bunt down the third base line. After a Matt Skole strikeout, Matt den Dekker walked, putting runners on first and second with one out. Following a Pedro Severino strikeout, Martinson doubled to left field, scoring Goodwin and den Dekker, cutting the Columbus lead to 4-2.
The Chiefs rallied and nearly tied the score in the bottom of the eighth inning. Singles from Martinson and Trea Turner, coupled with a Scott Sizemore walk, loaded the bases with two outs. An infield single from Goodwin brought home Martinson, but Matt Skole followed with a strikeout, ending the threat with Syracuse trailing 4-3.
Syracuse walked 10 times and managed 18 baserunners on the night, but left the bases loaded in the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings in the loss. Sizemore was the recipient of the four of the 10 walks for the Chiefs.
The Chiefs and Clippers are back in play tomorrow afternoon for the final game of the series. Jaron Long is scheduled to start for Syracuse, opposite of Mike Clevinger of Columbus. Game time is set for 1:05 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
