Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
LAST TIME OUT: The start of the day was about the parent club's rehabbing ace. When the dust settled, a see-saw series finale was arguably most influenced by the nine-hole hitter. Cole Figueroa went 5-for-5 with five RBIs as his RailRiders completed a three-game sweep of the Pawtucket Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon, 9-6. SWB posted its seventh straight road win while Pawtucket fell for the fifth time in a row, both overall and against the RailRiders.
TANAKA TIME, TAKE TWO: Masahiro Tanaka tossed three innings in his second SWB rehab start. He allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while whiffing four on 62 pitches (44 strikes). He gave up a homer to Jackie Bradley, Jr. and battled field conditions when clumps of the mound came loose in the opening inning. That prompted an eight-minute delay for emergency grounds crew work.
GETTIN' FIGGY WITH IT: Figueroa set a new career-high mark with five hits and fell a triple shy of the cycle. He posted a career-high-tying five RBIs for the first time since an April 6, 2012 effort at Pensacola while with Double-A Montgomery under the Rays' umbrella. Figueroa became the first RailRider to post five hits since Jose Pirela went 5-for-6 at Indianapolis on June 1, 2014. He is the first RailRider to drive in five runs since Zoilo Almonte hammered home seven runs at Gwinnett on July 23, 2014.
BOOSTED BATTING AVERAGE: Austin Romine went 4-for-5 with three runs scored. After an 0-for-3 effort at Norfolk dropped his average to .197 on May 11, Romine has gone 11-for-31 (.355) to lift his average to .246. The team's primary catcher has not owned an average that high since he was at .286 after his second game of the season made him 2-for-7 on the year.
WE'RE NO. 2!: The RailRiders sweep of Pawtucket has ascended them into sole possession of second place in the IL North. This marks the highest the RailRiders have sat in the standings since they shared the penthouse after an Opening Day win.
WHO'S HOT: Tyler Austin has hit safely in a season-best seven straight games, going 9-for-26 (.346) to lift his average from .194 to .218, the best it has been since May 3...Since Mason Williams started his Triple-A tenure 1-for-10 at the plate, he has hit safely in five straight contests going 9-for-22 (.409) with four extra-base hits... Ben Gamel went 3-for-5 with a run scored and his team-leading fifth triple on Wednesday...He leads the team with 16 multi-hit games on the year and went 6-for-13 on the road trip...Against his fellow lefties, he has hit .500/.550/.750/1.300...Since an 0-for-4 showing at Durham May 16, Ramon Flores has gone 15-for-44 (.341).
ARE YOU TOO GOOD FOR YOUR HOME?!: The RailRiders stand five games below .500 at PNC Field (11-16) and seven games over on the road (14-7). The team has hit .284 on the road compared to a .247 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 105 runs in 21 games (5.0/game). At home, the squad has plated 90 runs in 27 games (3.3/game). The pitching has performed better at home (3.40 ERA) than outside of Moosic (3.88). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.667) and no IL squad has more home losses than SWB (16).
ROAD WARRIORS: The RailRiders have won seven straight games away from PNC Field going back to their four-game sweep of Durham from May 14-17. The team enjoys its longest road winning streak since it claimed eight straight away from Moosic on a single road trip thanks to sweeps of Charlotte and Gwinnett from April 29-May 5, 2013.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders' 16 hits on Wednesday tied a season-high mark set on Opening Day...Rob Refsnyder enters today in a five-game funk (1-for-20, 4K) that has seen his average drop from .308-.277...SWB had not swept Pawtucket in three games at McCoy Stadium since a rain-shortened set from April 13-16, 2007...Going back to last season, the RailRiders have won their last 10 games at McCoy Stadium...The last loss came on May 17, 2014 in the team's first contest at Pawtucket last season.
