Syracuse Mets News Release

Durham, NC (May 29, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the series opener to the Durham Bulls, 3-1, Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham. The Bulls managed just one hit in the game, but scratched across three runs in a hitless fourth inning. Jason Martinson homered for the Chiefs in the loss.

Durham (27-23) began the scoring in the fourth inning. After getting the first out of the inning, Chiefs starter A.J. Cole walked Corey Brown, Curt Casali, and Richie Shaffer to load the bases. That tied Cole's walk total for the whole year in I.L. play coming into the game. Cole then walked two more in a row, Luke Maile and Juniel Querecuto, to bring in two runs. The Chiefs turned to Eric Fornataro out of the bullpen, who got Ryan Brett to ground to second base. Cutter Dykstra got the out at second, but the return throw to first was too late, allowing a third run to score to give the Bulls the 3-0 advantage.

Syracuse (17-31) got on the scoreboard in the seventh. Jason Martinson homered over the Blue Monster in left field, his fifth home run of the year, to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Chiefs bullpen was outstanding in the game, as Fornataro, Jose Valverde, and Felipe Rivero held the Bulls scoreless in four and two-thirds hitless innings of work.

Syracuse threatened in the ninth off Enny Romero. Matt den Dekker reached on an infield single to start the frame, and Steve Lerud was hit by a pitch with one out to put the tying run on first base. The Bulls went to the bullpen and their closer Ronald Belisario. The right-hander got Dykstra to ground into a double play to finish off the game.

The Chiefs and Bulls play the middle game of the three-game series Saturday at 6:35 p.m. Taylor Hill is scheduled to start for Syracuse, opposite Scott Diamond for Durham.
