Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves (22-26) shut out the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (19-30) 3-0 in the first game of their doubleheader Thursday at Coolray Field, but had to settle for a split of the twin bill when the IronPigs rallied late in the nightcap to beat them 6-4 in eight innings.

The G-Braves took three of the four games in the series, as they picked up two victories Wednesday by scores of 8-2 and 4-1, respectively. The first game of the series was resumed Wednesday in the bottom of the second inning after rain suspended play Monday and postponed all scheduled action Tuesday.

Left-handed starting pitcher Manny Banuelos (W, 4-0) helped set the tone Thursday with 5.0 scoreless innings to lead the G-Braves to a shutout win in seven innings. He gave up three singles and two walks with three strikeouts.

Banuelos pitched into the sixth inning before giving way to right-handed reliever Ryan Kelly (H, 1) after Domonic Brown reached on an infield single to begin the frame. Kelly retired the only three batters he faced, and right-hander Carlos Fisher (S, 2) recorded two strikeouts as he retired the IronPigs in order to close the game with a perfect seventh inning.

The G-Braves managed one hit against Lehigh Valley right-handed starter Phillippe Aumont (L, 2-2) through his 3.2-inning start in game one, but Aumont walked two and hit two batters to give Gwinnett its first run in the fourth inning. Aumont's first hit batsman was shortstop Daniel Castro, who left the game after he took a pitch to the helmet.

Right-hander Seth Rosin took over for Aumont, and Jose Peraza greeted him with the first hit of the inning, a two-run single to right field that put Gwinnett in front 3-0. Aumont walked six batters and struck out two, overall. Rosin pitched the final 2.1 innings of the game and gave up two hits with one strikeout.

The teams combined for seven hits in the first game, but had that same total by the end of two innings in game two with a score of 3-1 in favor of Gwinnett.

Gwinnett catcher Wil Nieves singled and scored the G-Braves' first run on a double by Barrett Kleinknecht and a fielding error by Danks in left field. Kleinknecht came around to score on a bunt by pitcher Kanekoa Texeira that IronPigs' right-handed starting pitcher Jason Berken threw past third base. Eury Perez drove in Mycal Jones on Henson's second error of the inning to complete the rally.

On the mound, Texeira allowed two runs on five hits over 4.0 innings, walking two while striking out seven. RBI singles by Logan Moore and Jordan Danks off the right-hander brought Lehigh Valley to within a run at 3-2.

G-Braves' third baseman Adonis Garcia launched his second home run of the season to left field in the third inning off of Berken to pad the lead to 4-2.

The G-Braves entered the seventh inning three outs from a win and a series sweep. However, right-hander Aaron Kurcz (BS, 3) gave up a two-run single to Brian Bogusevic after a leadoff walk to Russ Canzler and a single to Chase d'Arnaud that was followed by a wild pitch, which allowed the runners to move to second and third. Kurcz limited the damage thereafter, as he struck out the next three batters.

Lehigh Valley right-hander Dustin McGowan (W, 1-0) struck out two and retired the G-Braves in order in the seventh to send the game into extra innings, where the IronPigs tacked on two runs against right-hander Mitchell Boggs (L, 1-1).

Henson led off with a single and scored on a double by Moore, who scored on a fielder's choice ground ball hit by d'Arnaud. Lefty Nick Hill (S, 1) induced three consecutive flyouts to close out the game.

Left-hander Greg Smith gave up a leadoff single to Chase d'Arnaud in the fifth but also struck out the final two batters he faced. Righty David Carpenter (H, 3) struck out one and worked around a one-out double in the sixth.

No Gwinnett batter had more than one hit in either game. Peraza had a single in each and finished the day 2-for-6 with two RBIs. Garcia was the only other hitter with multiple hits on the day. He went 2-for-7 with the homer, an RBI and run scored.

Henson led Lehigh Valley offensively in game two. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, and Moore finished the nightcap 2-for-4 with a two RBIs and a run scored.
