Hessman's Grand Slam Not Enough to Beat Indians
May 29, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Friday night in the second game of a four game series, the Mud Hens held a lead going into the eighth inning but couldn't hold on. Tim Melville turned in arguably his best start of the season, throwing six innings of two run ball with five strikeouts. Toledo held a 4-2 lead over Indianapolis, but after a big eighth inning from the Indians, Indianapolis won 5-4.
The Indians got on the board in the first inning, wasting no time in taking the lead. With one out, Indianapolis' left fielder Keon Broxton, in his Triple-A debut, hit a home run off of Melville to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Indianapolis doubled their lead to two runs. Brent Morel tripled to get the inning started, and then Tony Sanchez followed with a sacrifice fly to score the run.
In the sixth inning, the Mud Hens got back into the game in big way. Corey Jones led off the inning with a walk, and Miguel Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice that moved Jones over to second. Trying to play small ball, Xavier Avery bunted, and the catcher Sanchez made a throwing error to load the bases. After that, Josh Wilson and Steven Moya both struck out swinging to get two outs. However, the threat wasn't over just yet for starting pitcher Clayton Richard. Mike Hessman stepped to the plate with the bases loaded, and after taking the first pitch for a ball, sent the second pitch over the wall in left-center field for a grand slam to give Toledo a 4-2 lead.
Bruce Rondon, in his fourth rehab assignment appearance of the season, came on to pitch the eighth inning for the Mud Hens. Although his last two outings were dynamite, Rondon couldn't get the job done Friday night. The lead off hitter for the Indians Alen Hanson led off the inning with a double to right field. Broxton followed with his second hit of the day, good for an RBI to get Indianapolis within a run. Steve Lombardozzi singled to left to put runners on the corners. To tie the game, Brent Morel hit a ground out to Jones at second that allowed Broxton to score. Sanchez followed with his second sacrifice fly of the game to score Lombardozzi, giving Indianapolis a 5-4 lead.
The Mud Hens take on the Indianapolis in game three on Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
