RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, in conjunction with the Eastern League, have announced that LHP Eric Surkamp has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 8th. During the week, the 23-year old made two starts for the Squirrels, winning both while striking out 20 batters. He worked a combined 12 1/3 innings, allowing just a lone run (0.79 ERA) on four hits. He is the first Flying Squirrel to earn a weekly award during the 2011 season.

Touted by Baseball America as the #9 prospect in the San Francisco Giants' system entering the season, Surkamp currently leads the Eastern League and all of minor league baseball with 51 strikeouts. Overall, he is 2-2 in six starts with an ERA of 1.65. His ERA is currently second in the Eastern League. He also leads Eastern League starters in strikeouts per nine innings, averaging 14.05 strikeouts per nine innings on the season.

Currently in his fourth professional season, Surkamp was selected by the Giants in the 6th round of the 2008 June draft out of NC State. The native of Cincinnati, OH, made 17 starts for Advanced-A San Jose in 2010 before a hip injury prematurely ended his season on July 18th. He was twice named California League Pitcher of the Week during the 2010 season.

The Flying Squirrels open a three-game series with the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Orioles) on Monday night at Prince George's Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmup will begin at 6:35 PM on Sports Radio 910 AM and at SportsRadio910.com.
