Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of May 2nd through May 8th:

Harrisburg Senators outfielder Archie Gilbert has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of May 2nd-May 8th. The 27-year old started six games for the Senators last week and batted .348 (8-for-23) with five home runs, eight runs scored, six RBI, three walks, two stolen bases and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Gilbert, who is a native of Hayward, California, finished off the week for the Senators with back-to-back two home run games. He combined to go 7-for-9 with four homers, five RBI and five runs scored in those two games at Reading on Saturday and Sunday. The 5'8", 184 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in homers (5) and total bases (23) last week and was ranked second in runs scored (8), slugging percentage (1.000) and OPS (1.444). Thanks to his power display last week Gilbert now currently leads the league in slugging percentage (.609). He is also ranked among the league leaders in home runs (7-3rd), OPS (.968-3rd) and runs scored (19-tied 8th). Archie, who hit .247 with 31 doubles, 11 home runs, 65 runs scored and 54 RBI in 116 games with the Midland RockHounds of the Texas League last season, was signed by the Washington Nationals as a free agent on December 15, 2010.

Eric Surkamp, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 2nd-May 8th. The 23-year old started a pair of games for the Flying Squirrels last week and had a record of 2-0 with a 0.73 ERA over 12.1 innings pitched. The 6'4", 190 lb. southpaw made his first start of the week on Monday night at New Britain and gave up just one run on two hits while striking out 10 batters and walking two in Richmond's 6-2 victory. In his second appearance of the week the Cincinnati, Ohio native threw 6.1 shutout innings to lead the Flying Squirrels to a 5-0 win against Altoona at The Diamond on Saturday night. He struck out 10 batters and walked three while surrendering just two hits to improve his record to 2-2 on the season. Surkamp has a league-high 51 strikeouts this season and is currently ranked second in the league with a 1.65 ERA. Eric, who was a California League All-Star after posting a record of 4-2 with 108 strikeouts and a 3.11 ERA in 17 starts with the San Jose Giants last year, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the sixth round of the 2008 draft after going 5-2 with 89 strikeouts and a 4.39 ERA in 14 starts during his junior season at North Carolina State University.
