Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (16-15) shutout the Reading Phillies (19-11) 2-0 Monday night at Waterfront Park to begin a three-game series with Reading. Thunder outfielders Austin Krum and Melky Mesa both knocked-in runs, and Dellin Betances threw five shutout innings to pick-up his second consecutive win. The win is Trenton's fifth in six tries and their eleventh in fifteen home games in 2011.
The Thunder struck first against the first-place Phillies as they took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Corban Joseph and Addison Maruszak began the inning with back-to-back singles, and Joseph scored from third on an Austin Krum sacrifice fly to left. Trenton would add a run to their lead an inning later on a Melky Mesa seeing-eye single to right, scoring Jose Gil for the 2-0 advantage.
That was all of the offense the Thunder needed as pitchers Dellin Betances, Cory Arbiso and Josh Schmidt combined to hurl nine shutout innings. Betances, the Yankees top pitching prospect, struck-out seven Phillies, marking a season-high for Trenton starting pitchers.
Reading is in town for two more games as the Thunder continue their three-game set with the Phillies Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. The Thunder will turn to LHP Manny Banuelos (0-0, 2.57), and the Phillies will send RHP J.C. Ramirez (4-1, 1.86) to the bump. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com.
The first 1,000 fans ages 18 and older to Tuesday night's game will receive Trenton Thunder/ Reading Phillies Reversible Bucket Hats thanks to the Deborah Heart & Lung Center. Call the Thunder Box Office at 609-394-3300 or log on to trentonthunder.com to reserve your seats today.
