Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
BOWIE, MD - Three Richmond Flying Squirrels (15-16) pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout of the Bowie Baysox (15-16), as the Squirrels claimed the opener of a three-game series, 1-0, at Prince George's Stadium on Monday night. The shutout was the third of the season fired by the Squirrels.
Right-handers Daryl Maday and Mitch Atkins engaged in an early pitcher's duel, each tossing three scoreless innings. Atkins was a bit sharper, easing through the Squirrels' lineup in order the first time through.
Atkins (1-1) ultimately retired the first 11 batters of the ballgame, but Charlie Culberson snapped the string and gave Richmond their first base runner with a two-out infield-single in the fourth. He stole second base, and the Squirrels took a 1-0 lead when Greg Miclat couldn't handle Roger Kieschnick's ground ball to second base. The run was unearned against Atkins due to the error charged to Miclat.
Maday (1-2) got stronger as his outing continued, and he worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings, departing to his first win of the season in the sixth. He allowed just three hits, walked two and struck out a season-high seven. Atkins worked six innings, allowing just the lone unearned run in the fourth inning. He conceded just two singles, walked two and struck out six as he endured a tough-luck loss.
Right-hander Ronnie Ray followed Maday and was sensational in relief, working three scoreless innings to take the Squirrels to within an out of the win. He retired the first nine batters he faced - five by strikeout - before walking Brandon Waring with two outs in the ninth inning. The Baysox sent left-handed batter Robbie Widlansky as a pinch-hitter, but the Squirrels countered with left-hander Justin Dowdy. Dowdy flied out Widlansky to right field to complete the shutout win. Dowdy earned his first save of the season.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Tuesday night at Prince George's Stadium. LHP Clayton Tanner (0-3, 4.85) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Tim Bascom (2-1, 5.40) for the Bowie.
