December 10, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS- Matt Summers was Wichita's hottest player in the first month of the season and Saturday night, his goal halfway through the third period broke a 1-1 tie with Texas to give the Thunder a 2-1 victory at INTRUST Bank Arena. The win propelled Wichita (13-7-0) back into second place one point ahead of Texas (11-6-3) in the Berry Conference.
Wichita scored first for the third straight game as Alex Bourret came into the right wing corner, turned into the circle and let a shot go that pinballed off two skates and through Silverthorn to make it 1-0 Thunder. With that goal, the parade of teddy bears came flying down and play was interrupted for approximately 10 minutes. The final count was 1,684 bears, breaking Wichita's record for the annual Teddy Bear Toss.
Chad Wollard tied the game at 4:20 of the third period when he found himself wide open on the left post and scored his ninth of the season. Wichita has yet to record a shutout this season, but Russo made some key saves down the stretch to keep his team in it and earned his ninth win of the season
The game winner came at 10:32 when Andrew Martens was able to hold the blue line, sent it into the corner for Thomas Beauregard who then found Summers set up on the right hashmark and he roofed it to give Wichita a 2-1 lead. Russo made a key save with less than a minute left as a scrum ensued infront of his net and was able to keep it from crossing the line. Texas had pulled its goaltender, but it was too late and Wichita hung on to stop a two game losing skid. The win also snaps the Brahmas' four game winning streak and puts Wichita just four points shy of Allen in second place in the Berry Conference.
