Gems Fall at Home 4-1 to Mallards Saturday Night

Dayton, OH - Despite outshooting their opponents, the Dayton Gems would see their winless streak extend to three games after falling at home to the Quad City Mallards by a final score of 4-1 on Saturday night. Scoring for the Gems was Damian Surma who notched his team leading eleventh goal of the season.

With intensity, the Gems opened up their second game this weekend shelling shots towards Mallards starting netminder Brad Fogal despite Quad City capitalizing on an early scoring chance to take a 1-0 lead just 1:21 into the opening period. Out shooting the flock 19-8 through twenty minutes, Dayton would be unable to find the back of the net and would see the Mallards take a two goal lead into the intermission after cashing in on an extra attacker goal with just :40 left in the stanza.

Quad City took control of the second period, scoring their third unanswered lamplighter only :42 in, this time for their second powerplay goal of the game. The tempo settled down considerably in the middle frame, but Dayton would be able to muster their first goal of the night thanks to Damian Surma's eleventh goal of the season assisted by linemate Brett Lutes and Matt Baxter at the 14:52 mark to trim the Mallard lead back down to two. Shots in the second would favor the visiting Mallards 9-5.

Both teams would battle through the third period, remaining scoreless until and empty netter for Quad City sealed the 4-1 final score with just :19 showing on the clock. Shots in the third again favored the Mallards 15 to 9 for a sixty minute total of 33-32 for Dayton. Quad City went a 3 for 10 on the powerplay, while the Gems were held scoreless in their nine man advantages.

With the loss, the Gems even their record to 8-8-4 and remain with 20 points in the Turner Conference. Dayton now sets their sights on the Fort Wayne Komets, and travel to the Warm Memorial Coliseum for a 5pm matinee to conclude Dayton's weekend series.
