Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
LAREDO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (10-8-3) fell in a shootout 3-2 to the Laredo Bucks (8-13-0) on Saturday as the Bees suffered their fifth defeat in a row. The Bees took a lead in the second period behind goals from Justin Bernhardt and Reid Edmondson but Laredo rallied for the shootout victory.
The two sides would trade chances for most of the first period but the Bucks would find the back of the net before the horn would sound. Adam Rivet fired a shot from the point that crossed the goal line with only 43.9 seconds to play in the first frame.
The Killer Bees would tie the game at the 1:21 mark of the second as Justin Bernhardt scored his first of the season. The puck was loose in front after Laredo goalie Torrie Jung turned away shots from Aaron Lee and Jason Dixon. Bernhardt took the puck and slid it to the back of the net.
Just minutes later the Bees would take their first lead of the weekend as Reid Edmondson ripped a shot from the top of the circles on an end-to-end rush. Jake Hauswirth skated the puck into the zone which he left behind him for Edmondson who scored his second of the season.
Laredo would tie the game with less than five minutes remaining in the second as David Inman scored his third of the season with a shot from the top of the circles while Laredo was on an end-to-end rush of their own.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the third period or the following overtime period.
The game progressed to a shootout, the Bees third in their last five games.
In the shootout Laredo goalie Torrie Jung did not allow the Bees to score and Laredo scored twice earning the extra point.
The Bees return to the Valley to host the Rapid City Rush this coming Wednesday night. Tickets are available by calling 956-843-7825 or visiting killerbeehockey.com.
