
Americans Rally Past Mavs, 5-3

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - Coming off of two consecutive victories, the Missouri Mavericks looked to extend their winning streak to three games on Saturday night against the Allen Americans at Independence Events Center. The Americans skated to a 5-3 victory in front of a crowd of 5,427 fans on the strength of three unanswered goals in the final five minutes of regulation. Andrew Courtney registered two assists for the Mavs on the night and Ryan Jardine scored a goal, brining his career point total to 299. The Mavs will now face the Quad City Mallards twice next weekend, in a home-and-home series, with Friday night's game played in Independence and Saturday's contest taking place in Moline, Illinois.
Ed McGrane got the scoring started just 41 seconds into the contest. Sebastien Thinel and Andrew Courtney assisted on the goal. Carlyle Lewis dropped the gloves with Scott Langdon halfway through the period, both players earned five minute fighting majors as a result. Colton Yellow Horn tied the game up at 1-1 with 3:12 left in the first period on a rebound. Jarrel Lukin assisted on the goal. The Mavs outshot the Americans 12-7 in the opening period.
Ryan Jardine put the Mavs up 2-1 on a goal at the 11:34 mark of the second period. Courtney got his second assist of the game on the goal and Steve Kaunisto registered a helper on the go-ahead goal.
Yellow Horn tied the game up just 2:10 into the third period on his second goal of the night. Assists on the goal went to Jim McKenzie and Bruce Graham. The Mavs took a 3-2 lead with seven minutes to go in regulation on a redirection from John-Scott Dickson on a shot from Steve Kaunisto. Kaunisto and Dale Mahovsky were given assists on the goal. The Mavs saw their lead quickly evaporate in the final five minutes of the game. Three unanswered goals by the Americans buried the Mavs and Allen skated to the 5-3 win. Scoring Allen's three final goals were Lachlan McIntosh, Mike Berube and Yellow Horn, who netted an empty netter with three seconds left for the hat trick.
The Mavs finished zero-for-two on the power play, and held Allen scoreless on the power play in one attempt. Brian Mahoney-Wilson finished the night with 32 saves on 36 shots.
The Mavs are back in action next Friday night, as the Quad City Mallards visit Independence Events Center in the first part of a home-and-home weekend set between the Mavs and Mallards.
