Strong First Inning Gives Herd 4-3 Victory
July 22, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
The Bisons scored all four runs in the first inning and held on to a late rally in the ninth for a 4-3 win over the Syracuse Chiefs Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Field.
Daniel Norris earned his third win of the season in a solid outing on the hill for Buffalo.
After a lead off walk from Dalton Pompey, a fielding error from Trea Turner helped to put two runners on base, Matt Hauge then hit an RBI-single to left field scoring Pompey from second. The Bisons continued the early rally with a two-run triple to the corner off the bat of Caleb Gindl. Gindl would then score on yet another fielding error, again by shortstop Turner, putting the Herd ahead 4-1.
However, the Chiefs wouldn't go away quietly. Syracuse added a run in the sixth inning, courtesy of Tony Gwynn Jr. RBI double to right field, scoring Ricky Hague to cut Buffalo's lead to 4-2 in the sixth inning. A two out home run in the ninth brought the Chiefs within a run, giving the Syracuse some hope to rally. The Chiefs would threaten tying or regaining the lead with runners on second and third, but fell short on a fly out to center.
Norris' rocky start in the first inning wouldn't affect his momentum that much throughout the game. The southpaw gave up three straight singles in the first inning, allowing the Chiefs to jump ahead early. The Bisons' offense gave Norris a three run lead, giving him the opportunity to pitch at the level where he wants to be. "It gives me the chance to be aggressive, more relaxed and find a rhythm," Norris said.
The Herd will wrap up their eight-game home stand on Thursday at 1:05 against Syracuse. Buffalo will then jump on the road for a seven game road trip vs. Pawtucket (three games) and Syracuse (four games).
BISONS NOTES:
Matt Hague is consistent (we all knew that). Hague went 2-3 on Tuesday, giving the International League hits leader his 40th multi-hit game of the season. #MattVP is batting .349 (126-361) on the season... Caleb Gindl and Dalton Pompey each added their second triples of the season in Buffalo's strong first inning.
