Rochester Red Wings News Release
Pat Dean pitched seven strong innings, helping the Rochester Red Wings to a 4-2 win over the Gwinnett Braves Wednesday night at Frontier Field. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre also won Wednesday, so the first place Wings maintain their half-game lead over the RailRiders.
The series concludes with an 11:05 a.m. matinee Thursday and another Fan 4-Pack Game with four tickets, hot dogs, drinks and a yearbook for $40.
Dean took the mound against the Gwinnett Braves for the first time this season on Wednesday night. It was also Braves right-hander Tyrell Jenkins' first look at the Red Wings in 2015. Dean was looking to rebound from a tough 1-0 loss against Lehigh Valley his last time out.
Dean allowed a leadoff single to Scott Kazmar in the second which set the stage for a two-out RBI single by Mallex Smith. With runners on first and second, Jose Peraza was next at the plate. Peraza was able to hit the ball solidly, but was robbed of a hit and a likely pair of RBIs on a spectacular sliding catch by right fielder Oswaldo Arcia. The Wings trailed 1-0 at the end of the second.
The Wings reached base for the first time in the third inning, after Gwinnett shortstop Daniel Castro was unable to handle a hard-hit ball by Doug Bernier. The Wings were unable to capitalize however, as Argenis Diaz hit into an inning-ending double play.
More trouble for Dean in the fourth, as he allowed another leadoff single to Kazmar. Todd Cunningham then drove Kazmar home with an RBI double. Despite the early-inning troubles, the Wings were able to pull together to record three quick outs, including a pinpoint throw by Chris Herrmann to gun down Cunningham on the steal attempt.
Tyrell Jenkins took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but the Wings were able to break it up in a big way. After an infield single by Herrmann put runners on first and second with one out, Eric Farris knocked an RBI double that scored Danny Ortiz, and extended his hit streak to a season-high six games. Bernier then hit Herrmann home on the next at bat with a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Argenis Diaz got himself involved in the fifth inning rally, bringing Farris home with an RBI single. At the end of the fifth, the Wings found themselves on top, 3-2.
Dean recorded the first strikeout of the game in the sixth inning, striking out Sean Kazmar, the game's 42nd batter. This was the only strikeout recorded by either of the game's starting pitchers.
The Wings kept their bats going in the sixth inning, as James Beresford led off the inning with a base hit. Beresford advanced to second after Arcia reached base on another Castro error, his second of the game. Three batters later, Herrmann scored Beresford with a two-out RBI single.
The sixth inning would be Jenkins' last on the mound for the Braves. Jenkins (1-1) pitched six innings, allowed five hits, four runs (three earned), and walked one. Jenkins threw 97 pitches, 57 for strikes.
David Peterson took over in relief of Jenkins, and walked the first two batters he faced. The Wings were unable to make anything happen however, as Peterson recorded three consecutive outs, including striking out the last two batters of the inning.
After walking the first batter he faced in the eighth inning, Dean's night came to an end. After a bumpy start to the night, Dean was able to to regroup an deliver a solid outing. Dean (7-8) pitched seven innings, surrendering eight hits, two runs, two walks, and striking out one. Dean threw 88 pitches, 62 for strikes. Michael Tonkin relieved Dean.
Tonkin worked 1 2/3 innings, picking up his eighth save.
The G-Braves out-hit the Red Wings 10-5.
