Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (44-54) held off a late rally to pick up a 7-4 win over the Toledo Mud Hens (42-56) on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Park.
The Mud Hens trailed 7-0 at one point, but would cut the lead to 7-4. However, that was the closest they would get.
IronPigs starter Jesse Biddle (2-0) gave up one run on four hits while walking four and fanning five over 5.2 IP.
The southpaw departed with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth, but LHP Cesar Jimenez (0.1 IP) was able to get Trayvon Robinson to fly to center and end the inning.
LHP Adam Loewen (1.0 IP, K) retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up his eighth save.
The Pigs took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first as Tyler Henson got on a base with a one out, ground-rule double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Russ Canzler's (2-3, 2 RBI) two-out RBI single.
In the bottom of the third, Chase d'Arnaud led off with an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and came home on Aaron Altherr's (2-4, SB, 2 RBI, R) RBI single to open up a 2-0 lead for the IronPigs.
Three Toledo errors in the home half of the fifth led to a five-run frame, which allowed Lehigh Valley to extend the lead to 7-0. Altherr drove home a run with an RBI single, Brian Bogusevic (3-5, 2B, 2 SB, R) scored on a throwing error charged to Mud Hens C Bryan Holaday, Canzler knocked home another with an RBI single, Gabriel Lino delivered an RBI single of his own and Devin Lohman plated the final run in the frame with an RBI double.
Toledo starter Kyle Ryan (0-8) gave up the seven runs (four earned) on nine hits to go along with two walks and three strikeouts in 4.2 IP.
The Mud Hens got a run back in the sixth as Biddle issued a pair of walks and a single to load the bases with two outs before a walk to Tyler Collins brought home a run and cut the lead to 7-1.
A three-run seventh brought the Hens within 7-4 as Mike Hessman hit a two-run homer and Josh Wilson delivered a run with an RBI double. It was Hessman's 14th home run of the season and the 431st of his MiLB career, which is one off the all time record in Minor League Baseball. All three runs were charged to RHP Dustin McGowan (2.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB).
Lehigh Valley tied a franchise record with five stolen bases in the game. It is the fifth time that the feat has been accomplished and the first time since May 24, 2013 vs. Norfolk.
The series wraps up on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Sean O'Sullivan (0-0, 3.00) will be on the bump for the Pigs against Mud Hens RHP Buck Farmer (7-3, 4.13).
