Willmar Stingers News Release

DULUTH, Minn. - Michael Murray pitched his finest game of the season, Logan Moon returned to form and the Willmar Stingers ended the first half the 2013 NWL season with an impressive 7-0 win over the Duluth Huskies. With the win, Willmar (23-12) recorded the second best record in the NWL.

Murray (Florida Gulf Coast) made his second straight exceptional outing, both just happened to be in Duluth. After registering a no decision last Thursday in a one-run-outing that lasted 6.1 innings, the right-hander picked up right where he left off. Murray breezed through the Duluth order, allowing just one hit through the first five innings.

In the early stages of the game, it looked as though Murray's exceptional performance may go unrewarded by the Willmar offense, but such was not the case. Instead, Duluth starting pitcher Patrick Trewin was victimized by the first four Stingers batters in the 5th inning and left the game without recording an out in the frame. The inning began with a Max Dutto (Cal-Berkley) base hit and a Logan Moon triple, which provided Murray with all the run support he needed; nevertheless, the onslaught persisted.

Jake Gronsky (Monmouth) singled to score Moon and Tyler Leffler doubled to chase Trewin from the game. Zack Tillery (Florida Gulf Coast) notched his only hit of the game to score Gronsky and Leffler (Bradley) to conclude the Willmar five-run fifth. The other scoring occurred in the very next inning. Dutto led off with a walk and Logan Moon smacked his second home run of the season to conclude his first half on a positive note. For his effort, Moon is recognized as the CDI player of the game.

NOTES: Willmar is 4-for-6 against Duluth on the season. The 7-0 victory marks the Stingers' third shutout of the season against opposing teams. Kyle Perry (Monmouth) made a pair of nice plays in the field: A diving catch in foul territory and a runner thrown out at second base. It was the first time Keith Curcio had been thrown out all season (22 steals).
