Cats Fall In Second Half Opener

The Border Cats dropped the opening game of the second half of the NWL season Thursday night, losing 6-5 to the Mankato MoonDogs before 773 fans at Subway Field. The MoonDogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead thanks to a three-run 1st inning, a two-run top of the 4th and a single run in the 6th inning. The Cats made a game of it as they rallied for five runs in the bottom of the 8th, but came up a one run short. Jason Vosler (Northeastern University) crushed a two-run home run, his fourth of the season and Dylan Becker (Missouri State University) also had a two-run single in the loss.

Caleb Smith (Rice University) started for the Cats and took the loss to slip to 1-1. The righthander pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and five runs. Smith walked four and struck out five.

The Cats continue their four-game homestand tonight when they close out their series with the MoonDogs at 7:05pm. Righthander Jordan Church (Sam Houston State University) is the scheduled starter for Thunder Bay.

CLAW MARKS: The Cats opened the second half of the schedule Thursday and officially waived four pitchers. John Havird (left elbow injury), Kyle Cornett (left shoulder injury), John Hayes (innings limit) Bradley Horn (personal) are all done for the season. Havird had the best numbers as he appeared in four games and posted a 1-1 record with a 1.38 ERA Thunder Bay has added three righthanded pitchers this week with twin brothers Anthony and Steven Pastrana (Dominican College) and Ben Neyen (Lyon College). Manager Dan Holcomb plans to add two or three more pitchers in the coming week.
