
Bucks Top Honkers to Begin Second Half

(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers fell short in a 5-3 loss to the Waterloo Bucks to open the second half of the 2013 season on Thursday July 4 at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo, IA.
Chesny Young singled with one out in the bottom of the first inning, stole second base, and scored on a two-out single from Kyle Pollack to take an early 1-0 lead. Waterloo added three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. The three-run inning was fueled by RBI hits from Will Sparks, Young, and David Kerian.
Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) and Matt Halloran (Minnesota) delivered back-to-back singles to start the top of the third inning. Campbell scored on a sacrifice fly from Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) and Halloran scored when Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) reached on an error to cut the deficit in half at 4-2 after two and a half innings.
Kevin Barker (UC Davis) was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the fourth inning and came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Campbell to make the score 4-3.Campbell went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored on the night.
The Bucks added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Pat McKenzie singled, stole second base, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a ground out from Kerian. Hanawahine and Burgess each singled with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, but were stranded on base to end the game.
Burgess led the Honkers offense by going 3-for-5. He has now tied a franchise record - set by Justin Parr in 2012 - with a 23-game hitting streak.
Brandon Stennis (Doane College) took the loss (2-2) for the Honkers, he allowed four runs, three earned, three earned on eight hits in five innings. Grant Borne earned the win (3-0) for the Bucks, as he allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits in five innings of work. J.D. Moore picked up the save with a scoreless ninth inning. Mason Pingel (Western Illinois) allowed one run on two hits in three innings of relief for Rochester.
The two teams will continue a four-game series on Friday, July 5 at 7:05 p.m in Waterloo. Tyler Eppler (Sam Houston State) is slated to start for Rochester (18-18, 0-1.) The Honkers will return home on Saturday July 6 at 7:05 p.m. to host the Bucks (25-10, 1-0.) Saturday is "Life's a Beach Night," featuring margarita specials.
