Willmar Stingers News Release
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. - The Stingers raked and then raked some more in a 7-run 4th inning, but could not withstand the potent bats of the Alexandria Blue Anchors in a 10-9 loss. The game played out in three segments with the beginning and end belonging to the Anchors. However, it was Willmar that shined in the middle innings.
Willmar entered the top of the fourth trailing 2-0 but quickly changed the complexion of the game on a Max Kuhn (Kentucky) solo home run. Then with one out, Danny Brennan (St. Louis) launched a home run over the wall in centerfield with nobody on base to even the score, 2-2. It was Brennan's third home run of the season, two of which have come on the Anchors home field.
The inning continued with a single from Logan Moon (Central Arkansas) who then scored on Chris Barnett's third double of the season. Having just taken the lead, momentum belonged to the Stingers but they did not relent. Instead, Alec Sol̮̩ kept the bat on his shoulder on four consecutive pitches to notch his second walk of the game and Tyler Leffler then spanked a 0-1 pitch over the fence to send a hush over the fans at Knute Nelson Park. Michael Suchy rounded out the inning with a solo home run, his 5th of the season.
Zack Tillery's start ended in a no decision as the right-hander threw 6.1 innings. In the 7th inning, Alexandria's mighty offense got the best of Tillery and reliever Chris Kubitz (St. Cloud), notching four runs to bring the deficit down to earth, 8-6.
After Alexandria grabbed at 10-8 lead through eight innings, The Stingers' rally fell just shy in the top of the ninth. Suchy began the inning with a walk and Nick Halamandaris' (Cal-Berkley) base hit brought Willmar within one run, but the Stingers rally was cut short by a hard-hit game-ending double play off the bat of Brennan.
Leffler (Bradley) is the CDI player of the game following his 3-for-5 performance at the plate. The home run was his second of the season and his average is fast approaching the .300 mark.
NOTES: Max Dutto (Cal-Berkley) replaced Sol̮̩ after the latter suffered a minor injury. Dutto responded well, going 2-for-2. The four home runs in a game marks a season high. Michael Suchy ranks 2nd in the NWL in OPS (1.018). The Stingers remain the highest-scoring team league wide.
