Gwinnett Stripers News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Gwinnett Stripers came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Indianapolis Indians by a 3-2 score in 10 innings Tuesday night in the opening game of a three-game series at Victory Field.
The winning run came in the top of the 10th against Indianapolis reliever Dovydas Neverauskas. As the last batter out in the ninth, Rob Brantly began the 10th on second base per Minor League Baseball's extra-innings rules. Pinch hitter Sal Giardina drilled the first pitch from Neverauskas to left, putting runners on first and third. Peter Bourjos followed with a ground ball to second that forced Giardina out, but enabled Brantly to score the winning run from third as Bourjos reached on the fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Indians also began with Kevin Kramer on second, but Evan Phillips retired three batters in a row to close out the game and preserve the Stripers' third win in a row and sixth in their last seven games. It was also their first win in six extra-inning games this season.
The Indians grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Christopher Bostick hammered a one out double to right off Gwinnett starter Wes Parsons. He scored on a two-out single to center by Jose Osuna.
The lead went to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth as Jordan Luplow lined a Parsons pitch off the wall in left for a leadoff double. With two outs, Jacob Stallings singled to center, plating Luplow from second.
The 2-0 Indians advantage stood until the top of the sixth when starter Tyler Eppler walked Danny Santana with one out. Austin Riley then crushed a double into the gap in left center, scoring Santana from first and cutting the lead to 2-1. Carlos Franco followed with a double to right, enabling Riley to score the tying run from second. The extra-base hit also upped Franco's RBI total to 39, tops in the International League.
The bullpens for both teams held the game scoreless for the next three and a half innings until the Stripers pushed across the game winner in the 10th.
Parsons pitched 6.0 innings with four hits, two earned run and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts. Phillip Pfeifer worked 1.0 inning with one hit. Jason Hursh (W, 1-2) tossed 2.0 innings with one strikeout. Phillips (S, 4) is now 4-for-4 in save opportunities by working a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth with two strikeouts.
Eppler went 5.2 innings with four hits, two earned runs, three walks and seven strikeouts. Bo Schultz was credited with 2.0 innings, one walk and one strikeout. Neverauskas (L, 1-2) tossed 2.0 innings with one unearned run, one walk and two strikeouts. His two loses this season have both come against Gwinnett.
Bourjos, Brantly and Franco were each 1-for-4. Brantly scored a run and both Bourjos and Franco added RBIs.
Stallings paced the Indians with a 2-for-4 night and one RBI.
The Stripers (22-27) and Indians (25-24) meet Wednesday night in game two of the three game set at Victory Field at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Michael Mader (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will make his second start for Gwinnett, while Indianapolis has not announced a starting pitcher.
