Pawtucket Takes down Tides 5-1
May 29, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
The Pawtucket Red Sox used some early offense and a strong start from Justin Haley to knock off the Tides 5-1 Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
The Pawsox wasted little time in jumping on Norfolk starter Tim Melville (5-2), as Tzu-Wei Lin led off the contest with a solo home run. Three batters later, Rusney Castillo connected on a two-run shot - his first home run of the season - to give Pawtucket a 3-0 lead. The Pawsox extended their advantage to 5-0 in the second frame, as Cole Sturgeon plated a run with an RBI double before scoring later in the inning on a double steal.
The early outburst was plenty for Haley (2-6), who limited the Tides to a run on five hits over seven innings of work. Haley struck out six without walking a batter, throwing 73 of his 102 pitches for strikes as he helped the Pawsox win their third straight contest. The only offense Norfolk could muster against Haley came in the third frame, when Austin Wynns singled and scored on a double off the bat of Mike Yastrzemski.
Melville, who entered play tied for the International League lead with five wins, suffered just his second loss of the campaign after allowing five runs on six hits over three innings of work.
Drew Dosch had two hits to help pace Norfolk's five-hit attack, while Norfolk's bullpen combined for six innings of shutout relief.
The two clubs will continue their three-game set on Wednesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 6:35. John Means (1-0, 5.59) is scheduled to start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Marcus Walden (0-2, 7.50).
Notes: Prior to Tuesday's contest, outfielder DJ Stewart was placed on Norfolk's disabled list, retro to May 27th, with a right hamstring injury...Paul Fry struck out two in two innings of relief, giving him 12 strikeouts in 9.1 innings with Norfolk this season...After retiring both left-handers he faced Tuesday, Andrew Faulkner has how held lefties to an .075 average (3-40) this season...Norfolk is in a stretch where they will play 13 consecutive night contests, as the team's next day game is June 3rd vs. Rochester...With a double Tuesday, Mike Yastrzemski now has eight extra-base hits in 15 games since he joined the Tides on May 15th.
