Toledo Mud Hens News Release

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Christin Stewart blasted his International League-best 13th home run of the season to give the Toledo Mud Hens an early lead, but the Syracuse Chiefs captured the series opener in a 10-2 decision on Tuesday at NBT Bank Stadium.

Stewart was one of three Mud Hens (31-19) to tally multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a single. Dawel Lugo finished 2-for-4 with a double and a single to extend his hitting streak to a team-high eight consecutive games, while Mikie Mahtook went 2-for-5 with a pair of base hits.

A.J. Ladwig was tagged with his first loss in eight appearances this year, tossing four innings and surrendering eight earned runs on 11 hits and a walk. Mark Montgomery pitched one shutout inning in relief before Victor Alcantara struck out four over two scoreless frames.

The Mud Hens started the scoring in the top of the opening stanza, as Stewart mashed a two-out solo shot to deep right that gave Toledo a 1-0 advantage. With the home run, Stewart became the first batter in the IL to notch 100 or more total bases on the season.

Syracuse (25-24) restored parity with a run in the bottom of the frame. Jaff Decker led off the inning with a double into the right-center gap, and advanced to third on an Irving Falu groundout. Jose Marmolejos then grounded out to second to drive in Decker and knot the score at 1-1.

The Chiefs then moved in front with a trio of runs in the third. With the bases loaded and one down, Marmolejos grounded a base hit up the middle that knocked in Bengie Gonzalez and Hunter Jones and put Syracuse ahead by a 3-1 margin. A fourth run arrived when Moises Sierra lifted a sacrifice fly into right to plate Falu.

The hosts gained more breathing room courtesy of a four-spot in the bottom of the next inning. After putting runners on the corners with nobody out, Gonzalez grounded into a fielder's choice that brought home Yadiel Hernandez and extended the lead to 5-1. Two batters later, Decker used a sacrifice fly to deep left to score Gonzalez and make it a five-run ballgame. Marmolejos and Sierra added back-to-back two-out singles that scored Jones and Falu, respectively.

After Syracuse tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, the Mud Hens wrapped up the scoring in their final trip to the plate. Jarrod Saltalamacchia ripped a leadoff triple off the wall in dead center, and scored when Harold Castro lifted a sacrifice fly into right.
