Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs scored ten runs for the fifth time in six games in a 10-2 win over the Toledo Mud Hens on Tuesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The victory is the Chiefs' sixth win in their last seven games to move back over .500 for the first time since May 17th.
Toledo (31-19) jumped on the board in the top of the first inning with authority. With two outs, Christin Stewart hammered a ball over the right-field wall for a solo home run that gave the Mud Hens a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse (25-24) responded in the bottom of the first. Jaff Decker led off with a double, moved to third base on an Irving Falu groundout to second, and scored on a José Marmolejos groundout, tying the game, 1-1.
The Chiefs took the lead in the third. Bengie Gonzalez and Hunter Jones both singled to put runners on first and second. After a strike out, Falu singled to load the bases. Marmolejos followed with a single to right field, scoring both Gonzalez and Jones for a 3-1 Chiefs lead. Moisés Sierra then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and Falu tagged from third and scored on the play to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
Syracuse broke the game open in the fourth. Yadiel Hernandez led off the frame with a single to left field and advanced to second base when left fielder Christin Stewart misplayed the ball. Tuffy Gosewisch followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Gonzalez then grounded into a fielder's choice where Gosewisch was out at second, but Gonzalez was safe at first and Hernandez scored to put the Chiefs up 5-1. Jones followed with a single that once again put runners on first and third. A Decker sacrifice fly to left field, scored Gonzalez from third to give Syracuse a 6-1 advantage. Falu followed with a single to put runners on the corners for the third time in the inning. Marmolejos then singled home Jones for a 7-1 Chiefs edge. That RBI for Marmolejos was his fourth of the game. Sierra added to the inning with a single that scored Falu from third base to make it an 8-1 Syracuse lead.
The Chiefs put the exclamation on the night in the eighth. Gosewisch walked, Gonzalez was hit by a pitch, and Jones singled to load the bases with no outs. Decker then grounded into a double play where Jones was out at second and Decker was out at first, but Gonzalez moved to third and Gosewisch scored for a 9-1 Syracuse advantage. Falu and Marmolejos both followed with walks to reload the bases. Sierra then worked a walk that brought home Gonzalez to make it 10-1.
Syracuse and Toledo continue their three-game series on Wednesday morning. RHP César Vargas will be on the mound for the Chiefs, while LHP Josh Turley will pitch for the Mud Hens. The game is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m.
