SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs are going high tech, combining technology, baseball, and education for students during the second Education Day of the season at NBT Bank Stadium on Wednesday, May 30th when the Chiefs host the Toledo Mud Hens.

When students and staff members from schools around Central New York come to NBT Bank Stadium on Wednesday, May 30th, they will be able to use their cell phones to participate in a game. Using an app called Metaverse and QR codes around the stadium, students can play a game on their phone that includes eight subject-based questions that combine baseball with traditional school subjects.

The game, created by Phoenix City School District teacher John Dalgety, uses the cell phone camera through the Metaverse app to overlay objects, scenery, characters, and animations onto the physical world, allowing students and teachers to interact with those objects through an augmented reality experience. Dalgety created this game experience through Metaverse specifically for Education Day at NBT Bank Stadium, so students will get the full fan experience. In the game, avatars will appear that ask questions and assigns tasks.

"Going into this, I knew many of our students are not necessarily engaged by the game itself," Delgety said. "They need entertainment. Because I know most of them will come prepared with their cell phones, I wanted to combine their tech love with education and baseball."

Students who successfully answer all eight of the subject-based questions will be entered into a drawing for a prize pack of tickets to return to the stadium for another game.

"I am so glad that we have incorporated this technology-based learning component to Education Day," said Chiefs general manager Jason Smorol. "This will be an exciting experience for the students in this community. We know learning doesn't end when the students leave the classroom and, we're happy to provide an educational experience that is fun and memorable for students at NBT Bank Stadium."

Education Day is presented by NYS 529 College Savings Program. Schools from around the area can go on a field trip to NBT Bank Stadium as all students and educators can receive discounted tickets as well as a discount lunch. NYS 529 will be giving away cinch bags to the first 3,000 fans who are 12 and under in attendance. Teachers must call ahead to reserve Education Day #2 tickets at 315-474-7833.
