Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - 15 strikeouts, 12 of them against Sioux City Explorers starter Jason Garcia, were too much for the Sioux Falls Canaries on Friday. The Birds dropped the middle game of the team's three-game series 8-3.

The 15 strikeouts were the most Birds hitters have recorded in one game this season.

The Birds scored first on a first-inning sacrifice fly by Mitch Glasser to make it 1-0 Birds.

Sioux City tied it up on their first batter of the game. Luis Durango laid down a bunt single, and moved to third on a wild throw from Canaries catcher Maxx Garrett. A throwing error from Mitch Glasser trying to get Durango at third allowed Durango to score the tying run.

Jose Sermo knocked a two-out double later in the frame. He moved to third on a wild pitch, scoring on an errant throw by Garrett.

The Birds made three errors in the inning, finishing the game with a season-high five.

Garcia settled in after a rocky first inning. He struck out 12 batters in innings two through six, including a string of six straight punchouts.

Garcia allowed two runs on five hits with four walks and 12 strikeouts.

His offense gave him plenty of support. Sioux City scored four runs in the fifth, with Nate Samson and Dean Green contributing RBI singles.

Birds starter Mark Seyler allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Sioux City scored two unearned runs in the sixth to take an 8-1 lead, hanging on to win 8-3. The win clinched a playoff berth for the Explorers, who sit in first place in the South Division.
