Nordgren, Birds Shut out Explorers for Series Win

SIOUX CITY, IOWA - Miles Nordgren and the Sioux Falls Canaries shut out the best offense in the league on Saturday night at Mercy Field. The Birds beat the Sioux City Explorers 3-0 to clinch a road series victory over their I-29 rivals.
Nordgren threw seven shutout innings to earn the win against an X's lineup that leads the American Association in runs scored. He allowed five hits, walking only one and striking out three.
It was the third time all season the Explorers have been shut out, and just the second time that they'd been shut out at their home ballpark.
Sioux Falls' bats broke through in the third inning, when Jeff Malm broke a 2-for-22 slump with a two-run homer. It was Malm's third blast of the season.
The Canaries made it 3-0 in the fifth when Mike Hart singled home Maxx Garrett. Hart finished the game 2-for-4.
Nordgren gave way to Nicco Blank in the eighth, who allowed a two-out double to Michael Lang. Lang moved to third on a wild pitch, but Nate Samson grounded out to end the inning, keeping the shutout intact.
Kyle Schepel pitched a perfect ninth, striking out Jay Baum looking to earn his 13th save and seal the win.

The Canaries are off Sunday, but head back to the Birdcage for a five-game homestand starting Monday night at 7 p.m. It's a Coca-Cola Monday game at the Birdcage; Coke products cost just a dollar all game long.
