Stowers, Mayo Homer In 7-3 Win Over Nashville

NASHVILLE, TN. --- The Norfolk Tides (14-15) defeated the Nashville Sounds (13-16), 7-3, on Wednesday night at First Horizon Park. The Tides notched their fifth straight win following a four run sixth inning and home runs from Kyle Stowers and Coby Mayo.
Nashville kicked off scoring Wednesday night, taking a 1-0 lead two at bats into the first inning when Francisco Mejia collected an RBI single. After being held hitless through the first three innings Wednesday night, Maverick Handley snuck a ground ball through the right side of the infield for an RBI single that brought home Kyle Stowers to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth.
Then in the top of the sixth, the Tides loaded the bases, and Noelberth Romero's sacrifice fly out scored Billy Cook to give Norfolk a 2-1 lead. In the next at bat, Errol Robinson notched an RBI single to bring home Handley and extend the Tides lead to 3-1. Jackson Holliday brought home yet another run with a fielder's choice ground out, and Connor Norby's sacrifice flyout brought in Robinson to cement the four-run inning that ended with the Tides holding a 5-1 lead.
Norfolk further extended their lead in the top of the seventh when Stowers launched a solo home run, his league-leading 10th of the season, 413 feet to give the Tides a 6-1 lead. The Sounds added two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the Tides lead to 6-3.
Coby Mayo responded in the top of the eighth, launching his 10th home run of the season on the first pitch he saw to give the tides a 7-3 lead over Nashville. Following a one, two, three inning from Matt Krook, the Tides notched their fifth straight win, tying a season high winning streak. Norfolk is now 19-19 all time against Nashville as a Milwaukee affiliate (since 2021).
Game three of the series is at 7:35 p.m. tomorrow night, with RHP Justin Armbruester (0-2, 8.38) on the hill for Norfolk.
POSTGAME NOTES
Extra Mayo: Launching his third home run in as many games tonight was Coby Mayo, who finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run...it marked the first time since July 15 - 17, 2023 with Bowie at Richmond that Mayo collected a home run in three straight games...Mayo's fifth inning single extended his hitting streak to a team-leading five games...since the start of the streak (April 26 vs. Gwinnett), Mayo is batting .421 (8-for-19) with three home runs, a triple and six RBI.
Povich Puts the Lights Out: Notching his second quality start of the season tonight was Cade Povich, who allowed just one run on five hits and four walks while striking out five batters through six innings against the Sounds...he and MLB's top pitching prospect Paul Skenes are the only two pitchers in Triple-A to fan at least five batters in six starts to begin the season...
Stowers Power: In the win, Kyle Stowers launched his 10th home run of the season as part of a 1-for-3 day at the plate where he added two walks, an RBI and two runs...his homer moved him into a tie for first place in the International League with Heston Kjerstad...it was also his 49th career home run with the Tides, which tied him with Steve Springer for the third most in Norfolk history.
