Storm Chasers Offense Stifled Again by Memphis

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (25-31) fell to a season-high 4.5 games out of first place as they dropped a third straight game to the division-leading Memphis Redbirds by a score of 7-1. The Chasers won the series opener with eight runs and 14 hits in that win, but in the following three games have totaled only one run and 11 hits in 23 total innings.
Memphis took advantage of a crazy first inning play that included two throwing errors on a bunt single by centerfielder Justin Christian, as the play set up two runs giving the Redbirds what turned out to be all the offense they would need in the game. The Redbirds were able to plate three more runs off Omaha starter Chris Dwyer in his six innings of work including a solo homer by Ryan Jackson for Memphis' seventh homer of the series, tying a season-high for long bombs in a series given up by Omaha. Dwyer posted his seventh quality start of the year and fifth at Werner Park in a losing effort.
The Storm Chasers offense was held in check yet again by the Redbirds pitching staff, being held to five or less hits for the fourth time and less than five runs for the sixth time in seven meetings this year. After new Omaha infielder Chase Lambin tripled in the seventh for his second hit of the game, the only multi-hit game for the Chasers, designated hitter Chad Tracy knocked him in on a groundout for the first Omaha run ending a scoreless innings streak of 21 frames.
The win for Memphis clinches a second series win for the Redbirds against the Chasers, the first time they have taken both series at Werner Park in a season in the stadium's history as well as the first time since the 2009 season Memphis has won both series in Omaha. The Storm Chasers have now lost eight of their last ten games, and have been held five or less hits in six of the eight losses, dropping them to their largest division deficit since August of the 2010 season.
Omaha will look to salvage a win in the series finale as left-hander Everett Teaford (2-1, 2.49 ERA) will make his fourth start of the season, and the southpaw has allowed only three earned runs in ten innings as a starter in 2013. He will face off with Redbirds right-hander Boone Whiting (2-1, 4.95 ERA), with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
