Pacific Coast League Announces Weekly Honors

June 3, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Kole Calhoun of the Salt Lake Bees and Robbie Erlin of the Tucson Padres were recognized by the league office today as the best of the best from May 27th to June 2nd, as they were awarded the Player and Pitcher of the Week awards respectively. Calhoun recorded at least one hit in six of seven games including five multi-hit performances last week, batting .407 (11-for-27) with two home runs, a double, and three stolen bases. His hot hitting included nine RBI and seven runs scored as the outfielder helped the Bees to wins in their last four games of the week. Calhoun's week was highlighted by a pair of two-hit games in which he tallied a home run and three RBI in each contest.

Born in Buckeye, Arizona, Calhoun was selected by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 8th round of the 2010 draft out of Arizona State University. He was named an MiLB.com Organization All-Star in 2011 and 2012, and started in right field for the PCL in the 2012 Triple-A All-Star Game. Calhoun made his Major League debut on May 22nd of last year and played in 21 games for the Angels over the course of the season. Calhoun was sidelined for six weeks after suffering a broken bone in his right hand during the first game of the 2013 PCL season. He is currently batting .387 with three home runs and 15 RBI in 15 games.

Erlin was dominant in his lone PCL start of the week against the Sacramento River Cats. On Monday in Tucson, the left-hander earned the win by going seven innings and allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out 11. His 11 strikeouts tied a Tucson Padres franchise record set by Sean O'Sullivan earlier this season. Erlin did pitch another game last week, but as a member of the San Diego Padres, as he was called up on Saturday, June 1st to face the Toronto Blue Jays.

Erlin, born in Oakland, California, was a third-round draft pick by the Texas Rangers in 2009. After three seasons in the Rangers minor league system, Erlin was traded to San Diego, along with pitcher Joe Wieland, for pitcher Mike Adams. In his second season with the Padres organization and first season in Triple-A, Erlin has gone 4-0 with a 3.79 ERA in eight starts for the T-Pads. He made his Major League debut on April 30th of this season.
