Memphis Redbirds News Release
PAPILLION, Neb. - The Memphis Redbirds beat the division-rival Omaha Storm Chasers for third straight contest, winning by a 7-1 margin on Monday night on Werner Park in the fourth game of a five-game series.
The victory pushed the Redbirds (30-27) to a season-best 4 1/2 games ahead of Omaha for first place in the PCL American Northern Division.
The first three hitters in the Memphis lineup went a combined 6-for-13 with a home run, three RBIs, six runs scored, and two walks between Ryan Jackson, Justin Christian, and Brock Peterson. Third baseman Greg Garcia added a season-high three hits, including two doubles. Catcher Rob Johnson had two hits and two driven in.
The Redbirds plated a pair of unearned runs in the opening frame, beginning with a leadoff single from Jackson. Next batter Christian then singled, which was booted twice by Omaha on the play to allow Jackson to score and Christian to reach third. Peterson followed with an RBI groundout to third.
Peterson did further damage in the third, ripping an RBI single to right. A pair of walks to Jackson and Christian from Chris Dwyer (4-4) opened the inning.
Jackson tomahawked a 2-0 offering from Dwyer over the left field wall to give the Redbirds a 4-0 lead in the fifth. The leadoff blast was Jackson's third of the season. Three batters later, Jermaine Curtis smoked an RBI double to center to score Christian, who previously reached on his second hit of the night.
Rob Johnson's two run single pushed Memphis' lead to 7-0 in the top of the seventh.
Omaha plated its only run in the bottom of the seventh, breaking a consecutive scoreless streak 24 innings in the series.
Right-hander Mitchell Boggs started the game for the Redbirds, working around three hits while striking out two in two scoreless innings. Sam Freeman (4-3) followed with three shutout innings with three strikeouts to get the decision. Kevin Siegrist allowed one run in two innings. Marc Rzepczynski finished the contest with two scoreless innings.
The Redbirds and Storm Chasers conclude their series with a 12:05 pm CT matinee at Werner Park. Right-hander Boone Whiting (2-1, 2.95) will toe the rubber for Memphis.
