Clevenger Joins Iowa on Rehab Assignment

Des Moines, IA - Catcher Steve Clevenger begins a major league rehab assignment with the Iowa Cubs today. RH Alex Burnett returns to the I-Cubs, but is no longer on Chicago's 40-man roster.

Clevenger opened the season with Chicago and was placed on the 60-day disabled list on April 14 with a left oblique strain that he suffered on a swing against the San Francisco Giants on April 13. Clevenger, who was selected by the Cubs in the seventh round of he 2006 draft, went 1-for-8 with a run, a walk, and three strikeouts in eight games with Chicago this season.

Clevenger played in five injury rehabilitation assignment games with Iowa last season after being placed on Chicago's disabled list with a similar injury to his right side in April. He batted .462 (6-for-13) with two doubles, a home run, and three RBI. The 27-year-old made his triple-A debut in 2009 and owns a .310 batting average in 98 games over three seasons with Iowa. Tonight will be his first appearance in Des Moines since May 28, 2012.

Burnett, who was claimed off waivers from Baltimore on May 27, made one appearance for Chicago on Wednesday, May 29, and was optioned to Iowa the following day. Before making an appearance for Iowa, Chicago designated him for assignment on June 1. He has cleared waivers and accepted his assignment to Iowa.

The Cubs host the New Orleans Zephyrs today at 7:05 at Principal Park. RH Nick Struck (3-4, 6.07 ERA) will start for Iowa against LH Duane Below (2-2, 3.38 ERA) for New Orleans. The gates will open at 5:35. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
