Stingrays Weekly: Stingrays Celebrate the Holidays this Week at the Coliseum

The South Carolina Stingrays wrapped up a six-game road trip, celebrated College Night and Teddy Bear Toss and battled the Gwinnett Gladiators, Orlando Solar Bears and Greenville Road Warriors this week for a week record of 1-2-0-0.

The Stingrays closed their second-longest road trip of the season Friday night against the Gladiators at The Arena at Gwinnett Center, falling 3-2 and snapping a six-game winning streak seven-game point streak. Defenseman Zach Currie recorded his first professional goal and forward Wayne Simpson buried is fifth goal of the season in the loss. The setback also marked the first regulation road defeat for the Stingrays this season.

Returning to the North Charleston Coliseum for the first time since November 24, the Stingrays hosted the Solar Bears on College Night featuring Clemson University jerseys and the annual Teddy Bear Toss for Debi's Kids. Forward Igor Gongalsky netted the "teddy bear goal" in the first period and forward Lindsay Sparks buried the game-winning tally in a 2-1 victory. The Stingrays collected over 3,650 stuffed animals to give to children in need in the Lowcountry.

The Stingrays wrapped up a three-game in three-day weekend Sunday afternoon against the Road Warriors, dropping a 3-2 decision. Forwards Parker Stanfield and Kyle Bodie registered their first goals as Stingrays in the loss.

Taking the Lead

The Stingrays are second in the South Division and second in the Eastern Conference with 37 points (17-4-1-2).

Forward Chad Painchaud is tied for 11 in the ECHL with 24 points (9 goals, 15 assists) and tied for fifth with nine power-play points (3 goals, 6 assists).

Goaltender Jeff Jakaitis stands on top of the ECHL with a 1.68 goals-against average, tied for first with 13 wins, second in save percentage (.938), third in minutes played (1034 and fourth in saves (438).

Forward Marc Hagel is tied for eighth among first-year players with 17 points (9 goals, 8 assists), fourth in rookie goals (9), second in power-play goals (4) and leads all rookies in game-winning tallies.

Defenseman Steve Spinell is second among league blueliners with 17 minor penalties.
