South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays took on the Wheeling Nailers for just the second time this season, and with the help of two power play goals, one by Travis Morin and one by Marty Guerin, they were able to go 2-0 against them, winning this time 3-1 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
"It's always nice to get a win on the last game before a long break," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "It was a good game by both teams, but a needed win for our club."
In the first period the Rays got out in front first when Morin got his 23rd goal of the season, most on the club. His goal came at 10:32 from Chris Chaput and Nate Kiser on the power play.
The second period featured back and forth play, but no scoring until the final minute. While on the power play Josh Johnson misplayed a puck which found its way to the back of the net at 19:17 off the stick of Justin Chwedoruk, his 12th of the year tying the game up at two.
In the third period the Stingrays took control getting two goals in the first five minutes to make it 3-1, the eventual final. At 2:07 Guerin got his 12th goal of the season from Sean Collins and Morin on the power play. Just a few minutes later Matt Scherer got his 7th goal of the season from Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Grant McNeill at 4:50.
The winning goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Curtis Darling who stopped 37 of the 40 shots he faced. The Rays went 2-10 on the power play while killing off all four short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action next Friday as they welcome in the Pensacola Ice Pilots on South Carolina Sports Medicine Stadium Cup Night where the first 2000 fans can get a free cup. The Stingrays will also salute youth hockey in the lowcountry for Carolina Youth Hockey night. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M
