Elmira Jackals News Release
READING, PA - The Elmira Jackals surrendered a season-high five power play goals and one shorthanded marker in dropping a 7-1 decision to the Reading Royals in front of 6,631 fans at Sovereign Center Saturday night. The loss was the second straight for the Jackals, dropping them seven points behind first place Cincinnati in the North Division.
Following a P.J Atherton man-up goal 12:44 into the contest that put the Royals up 1-0 after one period, Reading put the contest out of reach with four straight second special teams goals to build their lead up to 5-1.
Chris Blight made it 2-0 when he blasted home his 19th goal, a shorthanded strike, at 6:50 that was set up by Patrick Jarrett, the first of his ECHL season-high five assists in the game.
Marc Cavosie then struck for his 10th and 11th goals of the year 3:08 apart on successive power plays to spark the rout.
With Trevor Hendrikx (slashing) and Luke Fulghum (hooking) in the box, goaltender Joel Martin (30 saves) got hung up behind the net attempting to clear the puck to the corner. As it kicked free to the slot, Cavosie jumped on the loose puck and drilled a shot into the open net for a 4-0 advantage with 9:58 gone in the period.
Cavosie then wheeled into the slot untouched and sent a snap shot past Martin at 13:06 to extend the lead to 5-0.
Bruce Watson, back in the line-up after missing the last seventeen games, stuffed in his third of the year with 1:36 left in the period to try to stem the tide.
The Royals added two more in the final period to close out the scoring with Dany Roussin getting his 13th of the year at 12:35 and Joe Zappala's 5th at 17:43, both coming on the power play.
After Elmira's 5-2 win last Saturday over Reading which saw combined 253 penalty minutes on the score sheet, the rematch was somewhat quieter, but still managed to produce 130 combined minutes. Thirty-seven of those came as the final horn sounded with stick battle leading to a subsequent fight between Watson and Reading's Rob Lalonde near the Jackals' bench.
Jonathan Quick stopped 23 shots in the net, picking up his 18th win of the season, to help pull the Royals within nine points of the second place Jackals.
Elmira returns to action Thursday night, kicking off three games in three nights at First Arena, when they tangle with the league-leading Texas in a 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available at the Gray Street box office - First Arena, charge-by-phone at 722-3711 and 734-PUCK, and on-line at www.ticketmaster.com.
