Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Matt Zaba kept his perfect record for Idaho intact and John Lammers scored two more goals to help lift the Steelheads to a 3-1 victory over the Alaska Aces Saturday before 4,676 at Sullivan Arena.

Zaba, picked up by the defending Kelly Cup champions on a re-assignment just before the Aces traveled to Boise the weekend of January 18-19, beat Alaska twice that weekend and on Saturday, improved to 6-0 with the Steelheads after going 3-4-1 earlier this year for the Charlotte Checkers. The rookie out of Colorado College out-dueled Mike Brown, acquired in similar fashion by the Aces last week, who stopped 19 of 22 shots in his third start for Alaska.

Idaho managed just three first period shots but one of those went in, as Lammers, who had a hat trick last night as the Steelheads beat the Aces 3-2, scored off the rush on a power play with a wrist shot that zipped through Brown's pads only 3:11 into the game. John Snowden scored on a wrist shot top shelf at 6:30 of the second period to increase the gap to 2-0, and Lammers followed with another power play goal at 7:07 of the third to give Idaho an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

Bo Cheesman broke up Zaba's shutout bid with 5:16 left in regulation on a drive that caromed off the stick of Steelheads defenseman Chad Brownlee and snuck underneath the crossbar for the Alaska forward's team-leading 22nd goal of the year. Trailing 3-1, the Aces twice enjoyed six-on-four situations in the final two and a half minutes, but could not break through, ultimately finishing the night 0-for-10 on the power play.

Idaho, with 10 wins in its last 12 games to move within two points of the West Division lead held by Victoria, has beaten Alaska five straight times heading into tomorrow's series at 5:05 p.m., featuring a post-game skate with the players, presented by Fred Meyer. Meanwhile, the Aces (21-19-5) have dropped four straight at home and eight of their last 10 games overall, all against West opponents. All regular season games are broadcast live on Alaska's flagship station, AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to face-off.
