Chiefs Deal Blow To Devils

February 10, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Johnstown, PA - The Chiefs beat the Trenton Devils 3-1 on Sunday night at the War Memorial Arena. While the Chiefs didn't parallel Friday night's 9-3 thrashing of the Elmira Jackals, they managed to beat the Devils and claim sole possession of fifth place in the North Division.

The Chiefs got off to a quick start when B.J. Crum scored at 2:28. Assisting in the score was forward Joey Olsen and center Ryan Garlock. It did not take Trenton long to respond, scoring on a deflected slap shot at 4:12. Jason Paige of Trenton managed to sneak the puck by Chief's goalie Ryan Nie to notch the score at 1-1. The Devils failed to capitalize on both of their power play opportunities as the score stayed stagnant at 1-1 after the opening period.

The Chiefs got some assistance in the second when Jason Bonsignore of the Devils got called for a high stick. The Chiefs then scored a power play goal when Mike Knight slapped one in at 5:02 into the second period. Tyler Hirsh and Joey Olsen snatched a point with assists. That was Olsen's second assist of the night as he recorded back-to-back multiple-point games. This would be the only score of the second period as the Trenton Devils were only able to get off four shots on Nie.

The third period played out similarly to the second. The Chiefs scored another power play goal when Jean Desrochers sneaked a slap shot past Devils goalie Dave Caruso. The score was now 3-1 and would stay that way the rest of the game. The Chiefs missed an opportunity to increase their lead with Caruso pulled for the extra attacker. The Devils had a 6-5 manpower advantage, but were unable to close the gap on the Chief's 3-1 lead.

Ryan Nie earned his 16th win, stopping 19 of the Devil's 20 shots. Nie and the Johnstown Chiefs were able to hold the Trenton Devils 0 for 3 in power plays, while going 2-for-4 on their own power play chances.
