Wheeling Nailers News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - The Wheeling Nailers first road game against the South Carolina Stingrays since 1996 ended with a Stingrays 3-1 win at the North Charleston Coliseum Sunday evening. Marty Guerin broke a 1-1 tie in the opening minutes of the third period for the eventual game-winning goal.

The Stingrays had their fare share of offensive opportunities courtesy of 10 power plays. They capitalized on their first man-advantage of the game at 10:32 of the first period. Following the scramble after a Curtis Darling save, Travis Morin picked up the rebound and shot one off the arm of the goaltender. It rolled behind Darling and narrowly crossed the line before Seamus Young ripped it out of the goal but it was too late and the Stingrays had the 1-0 lead.

South Carolina had six power-play chances in the second period alone, and Wheeling used one to score their only goal of the game. In the final minute of the period, Aaron Clarke dumped the puck softly in on the goaltender Josh Johnson. Instead of freezing the puck, Johnson tried to play it and the pass was intercepted by Justin Chwedoruk. He spun and snuck a shot through the goalie to tie the game at 1-1 with 46 seconds left in the second.

The penalty carried over into the third period and as soon as it expired, the Nailers were whistled for another. South Carolina used it to setup Guerin for a one-timer and his 12th goal of the season. The Stingrays finished the game 2-for-10 on the power play while the Nailers were 0-for-4.

Marty Scherer added an even strength goal at 4:50 of the third to secure the 3-1 win.

Wheeling wraps up the road trip in Charlotte, NC on Tuesday. They take on the Checkers at 7:05pm from Bobcats Arena. Their next home game is February 22 against the Elmira Jackals. The first 2,500 fans will receive a Wheeling Nailers t-shirt. Call 304-234-GOAL for more information or visit www.wheelingnailers.com for details.
