Stingrays Stage Comeback, Defeat Charlotte 3-2
November 8, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Charlotte, NC - Pierre-Luc O'Brien scored his second goal of the season with less than five minutes to go in the game to give the South Carolina Stingrays their first lead of the night, en route to a 3-2 victory of the Charlotte Checkers at the Time Warner Cable Arena.
"It's always good to get wins on the road," said Stingrays Head Coach Jared Bednar. "I thought we played a little sloppy on defense, but [Bobby] Goepfert was strong in net again tonight and gave us the opportunity to fight our way back."
The first period started out poorly for the Rays as they had two quick penalties to kill off. After successfully killing off the first penalty, they were unable to kill off the second one and fell down 1-0 on a power play goal by Jared Nightengale on a blast from the point. The goal came at 6:30 and was assisted by Tomas Zaborsky and Michael Bayrack. Less than five minutes later they would make it a 2-0 game. Captain Kenny Smith got his first goal of the year at 11:01 from Jeff Miles and Joe Barnes. The Rays did not back down in the period and managed to get on the board at 15:42 of the period from Michael Dubic. The goal, assisted by Travis Morin, came when Dubic skated the puck into the zone and from his knees slid the puck through the five hole of Maxime Daigneault.
The second period started much like the first period did. The Rays had to kill off two early penalties allowing Charlotte to rack up the shots and the opportunities early. It wasn't until later in the period that the Stingrays started to take control and tied the game up at two. It wasn't until the 14:37 when Maxime Lacroix got his fourth goal of the season from Brad Farynuk.
The third period saw the Rays take their first lead of the night on O'Brien's second goal of the year from Trent Campbell and Steve Pinizzotto. The game winning goal came at 15:12 and came after O'Brien tapped in his own rebound in the crease.
The winning goaltender was Goepfert who stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Daigneault who stopped 20 of the 23 shots he faced. The Rays went 0-3 on the power play while killing off five of the six short handed situations they faced.
The Rays will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Augusta to take on the Lynx. Game time will be at 4:00 P.M. You can hear the game live on ESPN 910 The TEAM starting with the Benitos pre-game show beginning at 3:45.
