Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs had to scrap and claw to extend their three-game winning streak on Saturday night, but in the end they prevailed over Reading with a 5-4 victory.

The Chiefs (7-3-0-0), unlike Friday night, saw Reading strike quickly in the first period and take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. With Johnstown on the power play Mac Faulkner caused a turnover and raced into the Johnstown zone. He put a wrist shot by Ian Keserich at the 2:39 mark of the first. Johnstown's defense clamped down the rest of the frame, though, limiting the Royals to just three shots.

Johnstown made quick work of Danny Taylor's shutout bid in the second period as Ryan Del Monte netted his second of the year 27 seconds in. Working a 3-on-1 rush with Matt Robinson and Mike Bartlett, Del Monte cut to the net from the right wing, took the feed from Robinson and slammed it into the back of the net. Bartlett also earned an assist on the play.

Reading answered with another shorthanded goal, this one by Shawn Snider, at 8:23 to reclaim the lead. It would be short-lived, however as Andrew Sarauer scored a couple of "garbage goals" to allow the Chiefs to take their first lead. The first came at 10:42 when Sarauer tried to hit Robinson with a pass on a 2-on-1 rush, and the puck banked off of Matt Curley's leg past his goaltender Taylor. Jon Landry had an assist on the goal. Then at 14:12 Ryan Garlock took a pass from Landry and let loose a wrist shot that Taylor couldn't catch cleanly. Sarauer, perched just outside the crease, slid the rebound home for the 3-2 advantage.

The third period began as well as the second ended for the Chiefs as they extended their lead to 5-2. Randy Rowe cashed in at 2:27 of the final frame for his sixth goal of the season with Del Monte getting the helper. The assist gave Del Monte three straight multi-point games. Johnstown's final goal came at 7:31 when Kyle Bushee collected his first pro goal when he slammed a one-timer past Taylor with Rowe and Petr Pohl setting up the play.

Johnstown looked to have the game well in hand, but Reading didn't quit fighting and got goals from Dan Rudisuela (15:13) and Kevin Harvey (17:28) to make things tight in the end. Taylor ended up getting pulled for the extra attacker with 30 seconds left, but Keserich and the Johnstown defense held strong and secured the victory.

Keserich picked up his third win of the season by making 16 saves on 20 shots, while the Chiefs' power play was 0-for-5.
