Stingrays Grab Two-Goal Lead, Fall to Walleye in the Shootout 4-3

North Charleston, S.C. - Forward Cory Kane registered a goal and an assist, but South Carolina Stingrays (2-3-0-3) fell to the Toledo Wallye (4-3-0-0) 4-3 in the shootout at the North Charleston Coliseum Tuesday night. Through eight games this season, four contests have been decided in the shootout for the Stingrays (1-3 record).

Walleye forward Kyle Bonis started the scoring 7:31 into the first period on the power play ripping a shot over the left shoulder of Stingrays goaltender Brandon Anderson (SOL, 25 saves on 28 shots) from the right-wing circle.

The Stingrays marched back in the middle stanza and took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Forward Caleb Herbert tied the contest 39 seconds into the frame beating Walleye netminder Jared Coreau (W, 35 saves on 38 shots) of the right-wing boards. Cane and forward Cody Sylvester added assists. Cane put the Stingrays in front at 6:18 on the man advantage redirecting a shot from defenseman Lee Moffie. Forward Joe Devin recorded the second assist.

Forward Rob Bellamy gave the Stingrays a two-goal lead late in the third period slipping a shot between the legs of Coreau off the left-wing circle at 17:31. Defenseman Wade Epp added the lone assist. Seconds later Walleye forward Josh Holmstrom caught a break and pulled the contest back within one at 17:53. With defenseman Michal Cajkovsky in the penalty box for cross-checking and Coreau pulled for the extra attacker, the Walleye forced overtime with 22 seconds to play thanks to a drive from defenseman Shane Simms at the left point, beating Anderson over the glove.

For the fourth time in eight contests, the Stingrays moved into the shootout with Toledo scoring in the first and second round off of forward Anthony Lucianni and Bonis. The Stingrays could not solve Coreau, who sealed the victory after four attempts. The Stingrays ended the game 2-for-3 on the power play while the Walleye went 1-for-3.

The Stingrays continue a five-game homestand on Friday, November 7 at 7:05 against the Florida Everblades at the North Charleston Coliseum.
