Stingrays Fall to Cyclones 3-2 in Overtime

Cincinnati, OH -The South Carolina Stingrays (30-11-3-4) fell to the Cincinnati Cyclones (27-16-0-1) 3-2 in overtime at U.S. Bank Arena Friday night. Forwards Matt Scherer and Keith Johnson potted goals for the Stingrays in the loss.

The Cyclones jumped on the board first with a power-play marker at 16:03 of the opening period from forward Jimmy Kilpatrick. Defenseman Brock Sheahan and forward Barret Ehgoetz received assists. The Stingrays tied the game at 19:53 with a blast from Scherer from the top of the right-wing circle beating Cyclones goaltender Robert Mayer over the left shoulder. Defenseman Jason Fredericks and forward Gregg Johnson earned helpers on Scherer's 12 goal of the season.

Cyclones forward Mark Voakes made it 2-1 on the power play at 1:43 of the second period beating Stingrays goaltender Shane Connelly low stick-side. Forward Dustin Sproat and defenseman Brian O'Hanley netted assists.

The Stingrays tied that game a two early in the third period on the power play when Johnson found the twine at 1:40 from defensemen Grant Farrell and Dylan Yeo. The tie remained at the end of regulation and overtime would be needed. Cyclones' O'Hanley picked up a bouncing puck inside the Stingrays zone and fired an off-angle shot over the left shoulder of Connelly at 1:42 for the game-winner. Former Stingray Maxim Lacroix and Sproat picked up the assists. Connelly finished the night stopping 24 of 27 Cyclones shots. Mayer earned his 12 win of the season kicking away 35 of 37 Stingrays chances. The Stingrays finished the night 1-for-3 on the power play while the Cyclones ended the evening 2-for-4.
