Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has signed forward Chase Watson to an ECHL contract. In a separate transaction, forward Bryan Ewing has been loaned to the Springfield Falcons of the AHL.

Watson (6'0/195) (27), a third year pro from Media, Pennsylvania, was signed this past summer by the Wheeling Nailers but was released prior to the start of the season. Watson joined the Johnstown Chiefs in late November and played six games with the Chiefs, picking up two points (1g-1a), including an assist against the Royals in Johnstown's 4-1 win over Reading on November 29, 2009. Most recently, Watson registered eight assists in 16 games with the Bloomington PrairieThunder of the International Hockey League. Watson, who is the son of former Philadelphia Flyer Jim Watson and nephew of former Flyer Joe Watson, began his pro career in 2007-08 with the Augusta Lynx, where he registered thirty points (14g-16a) in seventy-one regular season games. Watson began the 2008-09 season with the Lynx, but when that organization folded, he took time to heal an injury before signing with the Nailers late in the season, playing five regular season games and all seven playoff games for the Nailers. Prior to turning pro, Watson was a teammate of current Royal Dinos Stamoulis at Providence College. In four years with the Friars, Watson scored nineteen goals and assisted on fifty-eight others (seventy-seven points) in 134 collegiate games.

Ewing, who was signed by the Royals on January 14, 2010, after being released from his contract with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL, has played six games with Reading and registered eight points (3g-5a). Overall, Ewing has collected twenty-nine points (11g-18a) in thirty-two ECHL games with the Toledo Walleye and the Royals. This marks the second stint in the AHL for Ewing, who began the season with Rockford and played nine games (1g-1a) before being assigned to Toledo.

The Royals return to action on Saturday night (January 30, 2010 @ 7:05 pm) when the Charlotte Checkers visit the Sovereign Center for the first time this season. The first 1500 fans 21 years of age and older that night will receive a Royals' beer mug courtesy of Coors Light. The Royals game night broadcast on the Royals Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast will kick off with the pre-game warm-up show at 6:35 pm.
