Atlanta Gladiators News Release

Elmira jumped out to a two goal lead in the first period, and never looked back as they defeated the Gladiators 8-1 Friday night in Elmira. The Gladiators came in looking to bounce back from an ugly loss early in the year, but would never get closer than trailing 2-1 early in the second period. Elmira rattled off 6 unanswered goals to bury the Gladiators in Elmira.

The Gladiators surrendered the first goal of the game at the 7:01 mark of the first period when the Donati's collected to put the Jackals up 1-0. Tyler Donati was able to blast a shot on goal from the slot, but Brown kicked it aside. Justin Donati was right on the door step, however, to flip a puck over a sprawling David Brown.

Gwinnett gained momentum when just a few seconds after goal Dan Sullivan squared off to battle with Guillame Lepine. Gwinnett had a few great chances before Tim Miller got free in the neutral zone with a partial breakaway. Tyler Donati caught up enough to slash Miller's stick as he released the shot, forcing it over the net. Gwinnett failed to convert on their 5-on-3 chance.

The Jackals began to pull away in the last minute of the first, when Olivier Proulx gained his second point on the night. Tyler Donati found Mat Robinson streaking along the right wing and Robinson threw a puck toward Brown. Traffic in front of the net forced the puck into the low slot and Proulx made no mistake on an empty net.

Scott Marchesi and Tim Miller both took penalties in the last thirty seconds and Gwinnett found themselves down 5-on-3 at the end of the first period.

The Gladiators had a strong start to the second period and after killing off the 5-on-3, found themselves on the Applebees power play. Adam Berti controlled the puck on the left wing side and moved it quickly up to Drew Paris at the top of the slot. Paris ripped a one-timer from the top of the slot and Scott Mifsud slammed home the rebound to cut Elmira's lead to just 2-1.

That was about the end of the good fortune for Gwinnett in the second period. While on a power play Justin Donati notched his second goal of the contest. David Brown fought off a few good chances before Justin Donati found an open rebound and slid a shot home. Tyler Donati and Jarrett Konke both picked up assists on the play.

A shorthanded goal just 39 seconds later put the Jackals up 4-1. A turnover in the offensive zone saw Chaz Johnson and Yannick Tifu with a clear 2-on-1 into the Gwinnett zone. Johnson quickly moved the puck across the slot to Tifu who tucked it home inside the right post. Brennan Turner picked an assist on the play as well.

Matt Lowry added a marker with 2:14 left on the second period clock bringing the score to 5-1. A nice give-and-go between Justin Donati and Lowry ended with Lowry depositing a puck into an all but empty net, and the Gladiators found themselves trailing by four heading into the third period.

Things never improved for Gwinnett as Elmira added three more goals in the third period. Keegan Dansereau, Brendan Connolly, and R.J. Anderson all added goals as the Jackals cruised to a 8-1 victory over Gwinnett. Gwinnett was 1-6 on the Applebees power play on the game, and the Jackals also notched a power play going 1-7. Elmira improved to 21-17-2-2 on the night and the Gladiators dropped to 19-18-3-2.
