Checkers trump Chiefs

Johnstown, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers Friday night by a score of 5-2 at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial.

The Chiefs came out with tenacity wearing pink jerseys in their annual Pink in the Rink event. Just two and a half minutes into the game Jonathan Ralph scored on a blistering shot from the red line past Miika Wiikman to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead early on. Goalie John Murray was awarded the only assist. Three minutes later Troy Schwab got into a scrap with Mike Berube that got the crowd roaring. The Checkers looked to answer back on a Michel Leveille slap shot, but John Murray snagged it out of the air. Late in the period, with Charlotte on the power play, Bryan Marshall swung around the back of the net and centered the puck to Connor Shields who fired in the shorthanded goal for his 16th of the season. The goal was registered at 18:29 and left the Chiefs up 2-0 after one.

The second period was looked to be going the Chiefs' way; John Murray stoned Julien Brouillette on a one time that looked destined to be the first Checkers goal. However the Checkers recoiled and picked up their offensive assault. David Marshall broke loose on a breakaway and put it past Murray at 11:06. Ethan Graham and Miika Wiikman earned assists. The Checkers scored again tying the game up at 17:46. Aaron Slattengren scored on a rebound with Matt Schepke and Daniel Tkaczuk gaining assists. The Checkers were not done scoring as with just under 40 seconds left in the period Andrew Carroll potted is 19th of the season with Brouillete and Tyler Doig getting assists.

The Chiefs were fighting to get themselves back in the game in the third but it was the Checkers that were able to put another score on the boards. Carroll scored is second of the game deep into the period at 14:29 with Doig gaining another assist. The Checkers scored their last goal and final of the game with Doig registering an unassisted slap shot at 18:39.

Murray took the loss and made 27 saves in the game. The Chiefs went 0-for-4 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Chiefs return to Johnstown Saturday, January 30 against the Toledo Walleye at 7:05. The Chiefs will be giving away pint glasses from The Crow's Nest to the first 1,000 fans 18 and up.
