Stingrays Fall in Shootout 3-2 to Sea Wolves

Biloxi, MS - Nikita Kashirsky got his first professional goal, but the South Carolina Stingrays were unable to hold on and fell to the Mississippi Sea Wolves 3-2 in a shoot out at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

"I really couldn't ask more out of the guys tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "They played hard these past two nights, but it was apparent that they were just running out of gas in the third period."

The majority of the first period was dominated by defense and goaltending. After nearly eight minutes of play, the Rays had the edge in shots, just two shots to one. After the only penalty kill of the night though, the Rays opened up on offense and took the lead. After Spencer Carbery left the penalty box, he had two solid chances against Ryan Munce leading to Matt Scherer finding Nikita Kashirsky for his first professional goal. Scherer came up with a missed pass behind the net and was able to feed a wide open Kashirsky who one-timed a shot by Munce to give the Rays a 1-0 lead. The goal came at 16:37 and was the only goal in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Stingrays continued their strong play in the second period and were able to get the only goal scored. The goal came at 10:46 off the stick of Jeff Corey. It was Corey's 15th goal of the year, his second in as many games after getting the game winning goal in yesterday's contest. The lone assist on the goal came from Lyon Messier, his first point since joining the Stingrays. The goal made it a 2-0 game going into the third and final period of play.

The Sea Wolves got on the comeback trail in the third period and scored a pair of goals to tie the game up at two. First it was Mathieu Melanson getting his 27th goal of the year, at 6:04, cutting the lead in half. Less than six minutes later, at 11:56, Alexandre Parent got his 16th of the year, tying the game at two, and sending the game into overtime. After a scoreless five minutes, the game headed to a shoot out, where Mississippi has been solid all year. The Rays would not get a shoot out goal, after Kashirsky, Josh Godfrey and Pierre-Luc O'Brien couldn't find the back of net. Mississippi on the other hand would score on all three chances they had, goals by Ryan Cruthers, Melanson and Jeff Kryzakos, sealing the win for the Wolves, 3-2.

The winning goaltender was Munce who stopped 48 of 50 shots and all three shoot out bids he faced. He now has six shoot out wins, most in the ECHL. The losing goaltender was Jonathan Boutin who stopped 24 of the 26 shots he faced but none in the shoot out. Boutin is now 2-2 in shoot out games this season, 2-1 with the Stingrays.
