Stingrays Bounce Everblades 5-3 on Opening Night

North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays (3-3-0-0) erased an early two-goal deficit and defeated the Florida Everblades (5-4-0-0) 5-3 in front of 5,336 on Opening Night at North Charleston Coliseum Friday evening.

The Everblades kicked off the scoring early in the first period when forward Mathieu Roy found the twine just 23 seconds into the game from winger Matthew Pistilli and defenseman Phil Paquet. Defenseman Mike Egener quickly made it 2-0 at 2:13 from center Mitch Fadden. Seconds later, Stingrays forward Nikita Kashirsky cut the lead in half by deflecting a shot from defenseman Patrick Cullity past Everblades goaltender Bobby Goepfert at 3:05. Rookie forward Dmitri Kugryshev received the second assist.

Midway through the period, Stingrays forwards Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Rob Ricci netted back-to-back short handed goals to give the Stingrays a 3-2 lead. O'Brien buried his first of the season at 8:26 from forward Trent Campbell and Cullity beating Goepfert low glove-side with a wrist shot from the left-wing circle. Ricci provided the go-ahead marker at 10:56 from defenseman Nate Kiser. Fadden tied the contest back up at 12:39 from defenseman Elgin Reid and forward Nick Tarnasky to complete the period scoring.

After a scoreless middle frame, Stingrays forward Maxime Lacroix broke the tie at 10:50 of the third period with his second goal of the season. Forwards Tommy Goebel and Kashirsky added assists. Moments later, Lacroix struck again to ice the contest at 15:59 from defenseman Johann Kroll and Goebel.

Goepfert suffered the loss stopping 30 of 35 Stingrays shots. Stingrays goaltender Jared DeMichiel picked up his third win of the season kicking away 27 of 30 Everblades chances. Both teams ended the night 0-for-5 on the power play.

Opening Weekend continues tomorrow, Saturday, November 6 and Sunday, November 7 against the Everblades at 7:05 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. at North Charleston Coliseum. Saturday is Boy Scout Night and Domestic Violence Awareness Night! Warm Feet Happy Hearts will be at the main entrance collecting socks to donate to local children in need.
